Hello,

I got a hint to use the gmane-interface...
...nice tool. :)

But the gmane-server which is mentioned ont he healp-pages of
http://www.r-project.org/

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general

and the links on that page also,
just only bring me to an gamne-archive, which is outdated.

I post via http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general
( http://post.gmane.org/post.php?group=gmane.comp.lang.r.general )
and it works and is up to date, but the gmane-archive reachabkle via the links
from the r-cran webpages is at least threaa days without update.

So, inserting working links would haelp the users a lot!

Ciao,
Oliver

When I look at that page and choose the "all messages with excerpted
text" link, I get what appears reasonably up-to-date entries compared
to what I get in my mail subscription. Have you considered the
possibility that it is not Gmane which is "without update" but rather
your knowledge of how to correctly use your browser that needs
updating? Generally there is some keystroke or button combination
that forces a a browser reloading of a webpage.

Gmane may be a couple of hours behind but not usually several days.

I used the reload buttonm as well as CTRL-R to look for new data.

I have here the latest date from 2007/09/10 at
http://www.mail-archive.com/r-h...@stat.math.ethz.ch/maillist.html

When using the other archive, which was recommended to me, it was
up-to-date (even if slow, because there was mentioned it needs up to 10
minutes for an update).

[...]

But this does not help.

Er, as far as I can see, that *is* the first link on
http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lang.r.general : "On the web, using
frames and threads."

What gives????

Ah, OK, found it.

If you look for

"Other mailing list archives for this list:

1. The Mail Archive
2. Original List Archive "

at the end of the page and use the first option, you come to

http://www.mail-archive.com/r-h...@stat.math.ethz.ch/

Which is ending at "2007/09/10".

So, when using the first link, the one you mentioned,
then I have the appropriate interface.

If I use the other archive - the one at the end of the page -,
it's about two months late...

When I used the URL you offered to the Gmane website, both the RSS
feeds and the web interface links were as current as Gmane ever is.
Furthermore when I also look at the link entitled "Original list
archive", it too is also up-to-date. You seem to have managed to
choose the only link on the entire Gmane r.general page that has an
out-of-date archive. It appears to be a link that is under the control
of neither Gmane nor R-help. What can I say?

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I hit my hand with a hammer.
Doctor: Then don't do that.

Yes, the original-lists's archive is not only up to date, it's also
quite fast!

OK, so you see it's the link, not me handling my browser wrong...

You could say: it would make sense for the r-cran people to change that
webpage, so that other people will find a link to a working archive.

This comparison is nonense.

One should change the link on the webpage, or completely throw it out of
the page.

It seems, at this R-mailing list some poeple are somehow arrogant and
ignorant,
not looking for doing things better.

Hello,

I have written a mail to gmane
so that they can correct their page (eventually throwing out that link).

Btw, the framed version of the link to the gmane-page (from r-cran project pages)
appears like being part of the r-cran-pages; that was the reason, why
I thought the gmane-archive-server was running under control of the
r-cran project. Could be done more clear, IMHO, but let's stop that
discussion now. It was not intended to offend someone, just wanted to make
things more user-friendly.

Perhaps you would be willing (in the spirit of improving
things) to go to

http://gmane.org/info.php?group=gmane.comp.lang.r.general&edit=t

and specify some information so that the Gmane people can
change the link to be correct?

cheers

No, please, many of us are reading/posting via Gmane from proper
newsreaders without any problems at all for years. Before submitting
editing details, please clearly describe the problem at the
gmane.discuss list, set up particularly for these problems. The Gmane
maintainers will try to help. Or just use a proper newsreader and
forget about it. Web interfaces are probably the worst way to read
news, except while on the road...
