Update R in Ubuntu

How does one update/upgrade an existing version of R to a newer
version in Ubuntu ?

The usual way is to follow the package manager.

Newer packages may be found at the R sites.. for that the apt-source
lines will need to be added.
(But it does not make a difference usually).
e.g.

deb http://cran.cnr.berkeley.edu//bin/linux/ubuntu oneiric


otherwise you can always compile from source.

Yes. It is good to compile from source. So that you will have latest version of R. I personally like compiling from source.

some time before I also found instructions on R Project how to upgrade R for Windows. See whether it works in Ubuntu. I don't think it is so difficult.

Read my mail... that is how it is done in *buntu
(We use Synaptic, or 'Software Center' or apt-get for installing
things directly from repositories )

You should use "R CMD INSTALL" only when the package is beta or is
not available via
"install.packages( )"
