Shalom:

If you do not have a support license, kindly email qz-p...@googlegroups.com instead of emailing us directly. I have placed that list on copy of this reply.

I'm sorry for the trouble with the print results. Could you please send logs from the offending machine?

From the QZ Tray Icon:
Advanced, Troubleshooting, Zip Logs (To Desktop)

I should also note that the additional Java installation is unnecessary with QZ Tray 2.2.x

What version were you using before the most recent upgrade?

We look forward to your reply.

Kind regards,

Hi,

Firstly thinks as always for this amazing product.

A user had a problem printing – while debugging it I installed the latest QZ and java before eventually finding the chrome setting about network access to get it working again.

The problem is that now the barcode looks like its enlarged and the font looks wrong resulting in it looking very bitty – see the attached image where the top is the new label and the bottom is an old label from before this problem started.

So far as I know the printer settings are unchanged.

Do you know what I should be looking at to fix this?

I was using 2.2.5 (pretty sure) and now I am using 2.2.6

I am not sure it was the upgrade because it wasn’t working (due to the chrome security feature) and I tried a few things to get it to work including Java updating and possibly also reinstalling the printer (as its been an issue for a few days so I may have tried reinstalling the printer at the outset, I am not sure)

Shalom,

Thanks for these logs.  I'll explain what they mean to me and then we can decide how best to escalate...
  • The logs show ZPL labels being printed
  • The logs show a printer called Citizen CL-E300Z
When I run these labels through a ZPL previewer application, they look very bad to me.

These suggest to me that the labels are bad directly from your website provider and that QZ Tray is not interfering with the quality of the printout.

Unfortunately I don't have any older logs to compare to.  If you have a workstation who's logs haven't been rotated since this started breaking then I would be able to do a ZPL side-by-side to help pinpoint the error.

What's a bit peculiar about this ZPL in particular is that it shows two labels being sent (^XA --> ^XZ) but only one has print data on it.  This isn't necessarily the source of your issues, but it's something I wanted to make you aware of as it's pretty rare to find this in the logs.

Hopefully this information helps you on your way to resolve this issue.

Not sure what the bad bit is – BUT it only just started in the last few days (on a system live for years) AND its fine on all other computers apart from this one. I am pretty sure the underlying issue is a chrome update with new chrome security features.

So I don’t know if it’s QZ (II actually don’t thin its QZ as such, just I don’t know what setting could cause this) but it does seem to be something to do with versions or settings as its still fine on all the other computers.

The new Chrome security issues are unrelated and they will break QZ Tray 100% until approved.

This issue is different, it's ZPL being interpreted in a bad way.  It looks bad to me.  Please re-read my email as it's very detailed.

You may decide to try to downgrade QZ Tray if you suspect a change has caused this, but Chrome's new security setting has nothing to do with the way your printer interprets ZPL commands.

These labels were made years ago so I don’t know the details – would it help you to get logs from a working machine?

It maybe there is something wrong with the syntax – you mention your response is details but I don’t see any comments on the problem in the ZPL code – but its come through all black so maybe I just don’t see it

Again to remind you we hve had these labels for years and on multiple other computers (and until the last few dasy this computer too) they worked fine.

I don’t mind to do whatever you recommend but noting the above I just think we may be looking in the wrong place?

I see this.

If you paste the label here, it also looks bad:

I'd be happy to compare the working machine logs, but we just forward the commands to the printer, we're just helping troubleshoot as a courtesy because we read a lot of ZPL.

Absolutely I’m not suggesting it’s the software I just know you guys are experts and I am not sure what it could be so thought maybe you had some idea

For the labels - again not disputing what you say i just don’t follow

Speculation will only help troubleshooting if you test or have comparisons.

  • Although I understand that this change coincided with a Chrome update, you likely also updated QZ Tray in a troubleshooting measure.  You may wish to downgrade QZ Tray.  The archives of older versions are here, you may use this as a comparison: https://github.com/qzind/tray/tags

  • If you truly believe the browser has caused this, you may test with Firefox.  Firefox is a bit slower to roll-out LNA restrictions, so if your theory is correct and this was caused by a Chrome update, you should see different results with different browsers on the same computer.

  • In my experience, Labelary has been very accurate as to what a ZPL-capable printer can do.  The code I pasted in a previous email is the EXACT ZPL sent to the printer.  Unlike a PDF, this is exact printing commands, a raw language that the printer interprets.  ZPL is a language invented by Zebra, but other manufacturers emulate this.  In your case, the Citizen emulates the ZPL language.  Here's a snippet from the product page on it.  Notice Zebra ZPL2 is one of many languages that it emulates.

  • You may choose to compare the firmware and driver versions between good and bad computers.

  • The labelary label looks bad, suggesting that the website you're using may be sending you bad data.  I think you should try to rule this portion out by collecting data from "good" prints and comparing them to "bad" prints.  I can do this for you with a copy of the "good" logs.
If you're serious about fixing this problem, I would focus on the above items.  Although some items are a bit mysterious from a casual onlooker, there's objective truths that can be used to determine what's different about the good and the bad.

I still strongly feel that the website is sending you a bad label based on my instinct of troubleshooting problems like this in the past combined with the fact that the ZPL preview app also shows the label looking bad.

Best of luck,

-Tres
