Al-Quran القرأن

English Translation of Al-Quran

[70] Surah Al-Ma'arij [The Ways of Ascent]

Ayat 32. And those who keep their trusts and covenants;

Ayat 33. And those who stand firm in their testimonies;

Ayat 34. And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well ,

Ayat 35. Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honored.

Tafseer of Surah Al-Ma'arij Ayat. 32 to 35. For obligations of trusts and covenants, express or implied, Cf Ayat 5:1. They are just as sacred in ordinary everyday life as they are in special spiritual relationships. In addition, our life itself, and such reason and talents as we possess, as well as our wealth and possessions are trusts, of which we must fulfil the duties punctiliously. 33. And those who stand firm in their testimonies; If we know any truth of any kind, to that we must bear witness, as affecting the lives or interests of our fellow beings-firmly, not half-heartedly, without fear or favour, even if it causes loss or trouble to us, or if it loses us friends or associates. 34. And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- Worship or prayer includes honest work, charity, and every good deed. To guard the sacredness of this ideal is to sum up the whole duty of man. We began with "steadfastness in prayer" in verse 23 above, and after a review of various aspects of the good man's life, close with the sacredness of worship, i.e., living as in the sight of Allah.

Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Shall I not inform you of one of the gravest of the cardinal sins?'' We said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!'' He (PBUH) said, "To join others as partners with Allah in worship and to be undutiful to one's parents.'' The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) sat up from his reclining position (in order to stress the importance of what he was going to say) and added, "I warn you making a false statement and giving a false testimony. I warn you against making a false statement and giving a false testimony.'' The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) kept on repeating this (warning) till we wished he should stop.

[Al-Bukhari Book 08, Chapter 74, Hadith # 290-291].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Ma'arij Ayat 33. And those who stand firm in their testimonies" The contents of this Hadith make the gravity of making a false statement abundantly clear. How unfortunate indeed it is that, like other major sins, the evil of giving false testimony is very common among the present-day Muslims. May Allah prevent us from it.
