[53] Surah An-Najm [The Star]

Ayat 1. By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes).

Ayat 2. Your companion (Muhammad [SAWW](PBUH) has neither gone astray nor has erred.

Ayat 3. Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.

Ayat 4. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.

Tafseer : Surah Najm is Makki and contain 62 Ayats. This was the very first Surah recited by Prophet Muhammad   [SAWW](PBUH) in public and it was so powerful that everyone present went down in prostration except for Umea bin Khuluf , Tafseer of Surah An-Najm (The Star) Ayat 01 to 04. By the Star when it goes down, Najm is interpreted in various ways. As most commonly accepted, it means either a Star genetically, or the close cluster of seven stars known as the Pleiades in the Constellation Taurus, which the sun enters about the 21st of April every year. In mid-April, or a little later, the beautiful cluster would set just after the sun, after having gradually ascended the sky in the winter months. In late May, or a little later, it would rise just before the sun. In its western aspects, it might be considered a spring constellation. To open-air nations (including the Arabs) whose climate usually presents starry skies, this is an object of great interest, and many folklore tales gather round it. When so glorious a cluster is content to bow down in the horizon and merge its light in the greater light created by Allah (see the last three lines of C. 228), it becomes a symbol of humility in beauty and power before the Most High, Whose revelation discloses the summit of beauty, power and wisdom. Hawa in the text may mean either "goes down (or sets)" or "rises". Whichever meaning we take; it makes no difference to the symbolic interpretation given above. 2. Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. 'Your Companion" is the Prophet Muhammad   [SAWW](PBUH), who had lived among the Quraysh all his life. He is defended from three kinds of charges that the Unbelievers brought against him: (1) that he was going astray, either through defect of intelligence or through carelessness; (2) that he was being misled or deceived by evil spirits; and (3) that he spoke out of a whim or impulse, or from a selfish desire to impress his own personality. None of these charges were true. On the contrary he had direct inspiration from Allah. 3. Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 4. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:

Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Ubadah bin As-Samit (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We swore allegiance to Messenger of Allah   [SAWW](PBUH) to hear and obey; in time of difficulty and in prosperity, in hardship and in ease, to endure being discriminated against and not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of evident infidelity regarding which there is a proof from Allah. We swore allegiance to Messenger of Allah   [SAWW](PBUH) to say what was right wherever we were, and not to fear from anyone's reproach.

[Muslim Volume 020, Book 08, Hadith # 4541].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah An-Najm Ayat 2. Your companion (Muhammad   [SAWW](PBUH) has neither gone astray nor has erred" It has been emphasized in this Hadith that even if a Muslim ruler is sinful and cruel, one should not disobey him unless he orders to go against the Divine injunctions. In that case, such rulers should not be obeyed. Similarly, it is not permissible to revolt against them until they commit clear-cut infidelity because there is a greater danger of loss in revolt and rebellion. It should be noted once and for all that the expression of truth and compliance with religious injunctions have top priority on all occasions. This should be done regardless of what people say on this account.
