Al-Quran القرأن

English Translation of Al-Quran

[68] Surah Al-Qalam [The Pen]

Ayat 21. Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke,

Ayat 22. Saying: "Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits."

Ayat 23. So they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying),

Ayat 24. No Miskin (poor man) shall enter upon you into it today.

Ayat 25. And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom).

Ayat 26. But when they saw the (garden), they said: "Verily, we have gone astray,"

Ayat 27. (Then they said): "Nay! Indeed, we are deprived of (the fruits)!"

Tafseer of Surah Al-Qalam (The Pen) Ayat 21. As the morning broke, they called out, one to another,- 22. "Go ye to your tilth (betimes) in the morning, if ye gather the fruits." Awakening from sleep, they were not aware that the garden had been destroyed by the storm overnight. They were in their own selfish dreams: by going very early, they thought they could cheat the poor of their share. See next note. 23. So, they departed, conversing in secret low tones, (saying)- 24. "Let not a single indigent person break in upon you into the (garden) this day."  The poor man has a right in the harvest whether as a gleaner or as an artisan or a menial in an Eastern village. The rich owners of the orchard in the Parable wanted to steal a march at an early hour and defeat this right, but their greed was punished, so that it led to a greater loss to themselves. They wanted to cheat but had not the courage to face those they cheated, and by being in the field before anyone was up they wanted to make it appear to the world that they were unconscious of any rights they were trampling on. 25. And they opened the morning, strong in an (unjust) resolve. 26. But when they saw the (garden), they said: "We have surely lost our way: Their fond dreams were dispelled when they found that the garden had been changed out of all recognition. It was as if they had come to some place other than their own smiling garden. Where they had expected to reap a rich harvest, there was only a howling wilderness. They reflected. Their first thought was of their own personal loss, the loss of their labour and the loss of their capital. They had plotted to keep out others from the fruits: now, as it happened, the loss was their own. 27. "Indeed we are shut out (of the fruits of our labour)!"

Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "O son of Adam, if you spend the surplus, it will be better for you; and if you retain it, it will be evil for you. You will not be reprimanded for storing what is enough for your needs. First of all, spend upon those who are your dependents.''

[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 2343].

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Qalam Ayat 25. And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor taking anything of the fruits therefrom). The Muslims have been allowed, rather emphatically told and commanded, to possess as much wealth as could meet their personal and family needs. Yet, they have also been advised to spend the spare money on the needy. Man has been told that it is unwise on his part to be niggardly about money because it spawns unfavorable results in this world as well as in the Hereafter. The concentration of wealth within a few hands freezes its vitality and leads to corruption in society. As for the Hereafter, the result of stinginess will be definitely bad as the Qur'an says: "The things which they covetously withheld shall be tied to their necks like a collar on the Day of Resurrection.'' (3:180) Some `Ulama' are of the opinion that after the payment of the annual Zakat (poor-due), it is not necessary to spend more. But to be accurate, if somebody pays Zakat and yet retains enough money with him, and there are some needy people also in his knowledge, then he will be bound to spend on them. At-Tirmidhi quoted a Hadith in which Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Indeed there is a right (for poor) in the wealth in addition to Zakat.''.
