Al-Quran القرأن

English Translation of Al-Quran

[69] Surah Al-Haqqah [The Sure Reality]

Ayat 1. The Reality (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)!

Ayat 2. What is the Reality?

Ayat 3. And what will make you know what the Reality is?

Ayat 4. Thamud and 'Ad people denied the Qira’ah [the striking Hour (of Judgement)]!

Ayat 5. As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the awful cry!

Tafseer of Surah Al-Haqqah Ayat 1 to 5. The Sure Reality! Al Haqqah; the sure Truth: the Event that must inevitably come to pass; the state in which all falsehood and presence will vanish, and the absolute Truth will be laid bare. The question in the three verses raises an air of mystery. The solution is suggested in what happened to Thamud and 'Ad, and other people of antiquity, who disregarded the Truth of Allah and came to violent end, even in this life-symbolically suggesting the great Cataclysm of the Hereafter, the Day of Doom. 2. What is the Sure Reality? 3. And what will make thee realize what the Sure Reality is? 4. The Thamud and the ´Ad People (branded) as false the Stunning Calamity! For these two peoples of antiquity, see Ayat 7:73, and 7:65. Another description of the terrible Day of Judgement. This word Qira’ah also occurs as the title of. 5. But the Thamud, they were destroyed by a terrible Storm of thunder and lightning! Thamud were addicted to class arrogance. They oppressed the poor. The prophet Salih preached to them, and put forward a wonderful she-camel as a symbol of the rights of the poor, but they hamstrung her. See Ayat 7:73. They were destroyed in a mighty calamity, an earthquake accompanying a terrible thunderstorm.

Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Ibn Umer (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: when Messenger of Allah   [SAWW](PBUH), and his Companions reached Al-Hijr, the dwellings of the Thamud people, he admonished his Companions (saying), "Do not pass by these people who are being tormented, without weeping, lest the punishment should befall you as it had befallen them.'' [Al-Bukhari Book 04, Chapter 55, Hadith # 564].

Another narration is: Hazrat Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: When the Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) passed near Al-Hijr, he said, "Do not enter without weeping, the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, lest the same chastisement should fall upon you as it had fallen upon them.'' Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) then covered his head and sped up until he crossed the valley of the tormented people.

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Haqqah Ayat 4. Thamud and 'Ad people denied the Qira’ah [the striking Hour (of Judgement)]! ” The Thamud were the people to whose guidance Allah sent Prophet Salih AS. They lived between Al-Madinah and Syria. In 10 A.H. when the Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) went to the Syrian border for the Tabuk expedition, he also passed through this ruined territory. This Hadith is related to the address which he gave to his Companions on the occasion. Here is an instruction that when we happen to pass through the territory of a nation destroyed in the past as a result of Divine wrath, we are advised to quicken one's pace. That is why we have been commanded to avoid the company of the corrupt and the wrongdoers, lest we meet their bad end, too. As the Qur'an says: "And incline not toward those who do wrong, lest the Fire should touch you.'' (11:113) May Allah saves us from it!.
