[63] Surah Al-Munafiqun [The Hypocrites]
Ayat 8. They (hypocrites) say: "If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honorable ('Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul, the chief of hypocrites at Al Madinah) will expel therefrom the meaner (i.e. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH)." But honour, power and glory belong to Allah, His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not.
Tafseer of Surah Al-Munafiqun Ayat 8. They say, "If we return to Medina, surely the more honorable (element) will expel therefrom the meaner." But honour belongs to Allah and His Messenger, and to the Believers; but the Hypocrites know not. Words of this import were spoken by 'Abd Allah Ibn Ubayy, the leader of the Madinah Hypocrites to or about the Exiles, in the course of the expedition against the Banu Mustaliq in the fourth or fifth year of the Hijrah. He had hopes of leadership which were disappointed by the coming to Madinah of a man far greater than he. So, he arrogated to himself and his clique the title of "the more honorable (element)" and slightingly spoke of the Emigrants as the "meaner" element that had intruded from outside.
Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Zaid bin Al-Arqam (May Allah be pleased with him) said: We set out on a journey along with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) and we faced many hardships. `Abdullah bin Ubayy (the chief of the hypocrites at Al-Madinah) said to his friends: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) until they desert him.'' He also said: "If we return to Al-Madinah, the more honorable (meaning himself, i.e., Abdullah bin Ubayy) will drive out there from the meaner (meaning Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH).'' I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH) and informed him about that and he sent someone to `Abdullah bin Ubayy. He asked him whether he had said that or not. Abdullah took an oath that he had not done anything of that sort and said that it was Zaid who carried a false tale to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH). Zaid said: I was so much perturbed because of this until this Verse was revealed verifying my statement: "When the hypocrites come to you (O Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH), they say: `We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.' Allah knows that you are indeed His Messenger, and Allah bears witness that the hypocrites are liars indeed.'' (63:1) Then the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) called the hypocrites in order to seek forgiveness for them from Allah, but they turned away their heads.
[Al-Bukhari Hadith # 4900 and Muslim Hadith # 2772].
Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah Al-Munafiqun Ayat 08. “But honour, power and glory belong to Allah, His Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ [SAWW](PBUH), and to the believers, but the hypocrites know not" This Hadith highlight hypocrites’ shameful behavior, Abdullah bin Ubayy was the chief of the hypocrites at Al-Madinah. In the journey mentioned in this Hadith, which was undertaken in connection with the war with Banu Al-Mustaliq, he had used improper words against the Prophet (PBUH) and Muslims, which were overheard by Zaid bin Al-Arqam (May Allah be pleased with him). The latter informed the Prophet ﷺ (PBUH) about this occurrence. This incident goes to prove that exposing the designs and conspiracies of hypocrites does not form backbiting. In fact, it is essential to keep people informed about them in the interest of Islam and Muslims.
