Al-Quran القرأن

English Translation of Al-Quran

[53] Surah An-Najm [The Star]

Ayat 23. They are but names (Al-Lat, Manat and Al-'Uzza) which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!

Tafseer of Surah An-Najm (The Star) Ayat 23. These are nothing but names which ye have devised, ye and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire! Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! Cf. 7:71; 12:40. The divine names which they give to stocks and stones, or to heroes living or dead, or even to prophets and men of God, are but the creatures of their own fancy. Whatever they were, they were not gods. Cf. 6:116. Conjecture is a dangerous thing when speaking of divine things. It follows lines which reflect the lusts of men's own hearts. Why not follow the divine guidance which comes through the prophets of Allah?.

Hadith الحدیث

English Translation of Hadith

Hazrat Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "Islam is based on five (pillars): testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His slave and Messenger; performing of Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat); the payment of Zakat; performing Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House [of Allah (Kabbah)]; and Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan.''

[Al-Bukhari Book 01, Chapter 02, Hadith # 07]

Lesson: as mentioned above in Surah An-Najm Ayat 23. “They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!" In this Hadith, Islam has been compared to a building which rests on five pillars. As a building cannot stand without its foundation, similarly, Islam cannot exist without these pillars. For this reason, he who denies any one of these obligations is a disbeliever, and he who neglects any of them due to slackness or want of attention is a sinful and impious Muslim.
