As previously communicated, the money-back guarantee for all other FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Office services remains suspended. The status of the money-back guarantee for these FedEx services and additional FedEx services worldwide is being evaluated on an ongoing basis, and our focus remains on continuing to provide the best possible service to our customers during this period of uncertainty.

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide customers with superior service, we are temporarily extending the delivery commitment times for the following select time-definite FedEx Express services on Wednesday, May 29th and Thursday, May 30th by 90 minutes for the Memorial Day holiday:

The 18th century entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood pioneered many of the marketing strategies used today, including the satisfaction-or-money-back guarantee on the entire range of his pottery products.[1] He took advantage of his guarantee offer to send his products to rich clientele across Europe unsolicited. The money-back guarantee was also a major tool of early U.S. mail order sales pioneers in the United States such as Richard Sears and Powel Crosley Jr. to win the confidence of consumers.

The use of money back guarantees has grown significantly over the last few years[when?] and has become standard practice in direct marketing across all media. Very often, unreliable businesses use it as a tactic to reel the customer into a false sense of safety. Many guarantees by sellers often fall outside the allowed scope of their merchant agreements with their banks. For example, Visa and MasterCard explicitly bar the seller from offering a money-back guarantee past 90 days from purchase.

Issues relating to false guarantees have become so common in the United States that the Federal Trade Commission has specifically addressed the issue in the Code of Federal Regulations Handbook ( 239.1).

Then I learned about scammers and what to do. Let's take the genius who sent back the refilled bottles of power aid. In a situation like that I would give the buyer the benefit of the doubt. Send them a nice, professionally worded note stating that you received refilled bottles in the return and that must mean that there was theft along the line in the USPS. State that you appreciate the return but that you don't like theft in the USPS and as a result will be filing a theft report with the Inspector General and other LE agencies. Key is to not accuse the buyer of anything. This gives them notice and a scammer who is wavering might give up the scam.

I know I wasn't the most patient and certainly didn't have a bunch of time to deal with baloney, but thankfully it is a very small percentage of sales! Actually, it was a bit of time, the first time I dealt with stuff. But after a couple of times, I kept notes, and had a 'system' down so subsequent events took a whole lot less time. I think for me the frustration, anxiety and fear came from not only having to deal with returns but not knowing how to handle them. Nice thing I discovered was that my ignorance of the return process could be "cured" with some learning. Now when stuff happens its no more time than making a listing and less stress cause I know what to do!

That's really no help for those of us that aren't making a living selling on eBay. For example, I sold a Black Magic EGPU. Cost $67 to them and $67 too return. Claim was the item didn't work. It worked fine when returned and cost me a lot of money.

I absolutely feel you pain. I have had about 25 returns after being on EBay for, this time, about 5 years. I remember when this MBG was started that required Top Rated Sellers to offer 30, free returns someone mentioned that it wasn't that big of a deal because you wouldn't have that many and it should just be considered a cost of doing business. Well...the Cost of Doing Business has gotten out of control. However, others on that same topic said that EBay did and always would stand with the buyer to the detriment of the seller. I believe this is listed as the top complaint against EBay and it has proven itself too true.

My worst return was a lady who bought 20 yards of a fabric without asking a single question as all my listing ask for if they have any. So, she got the fabric told me how much she loved, loved it...but it just wouldn't work for her decor. So, like your buyer, she wadded it up, stuck it back in a box and sent it back at my expense. I got it back and the first 8-10 yards was ruined because water got to the fabric and destroyed about 8 yards. Because it was not ALL destroyed, the USPS would not make good on the insurance and EBay would not back me up when I asked them to...and the list goes on and on.

I have been on the phone with EBay since 6:00 am this morning and it is not 1:32 in the pm trying to get through their phone mess only to have the young girl working with me..issue the refund to the buyer by mistake. No way to stop it. In any case...and I am not asking for comment or contact...I am just trying to state the case I have been trying to make to EBay.

1. The time allowed for a seller to return the item is entirely too long...Most wait until the very last day to mail it back. I realize they are hoping that the seller will just issue the refund and they get to keep the item. That is the first option that EBay give both the seller and the buyer. Refund now and they get to keep the item.

2. By the time you get the item back...usually three weeks has gone by. Meanwhile, you inventory is tied up and so are your funds. Even when you refund the buyer...they still are given roughly another 10 days to acknowledge they have received it. Buyers see the word FREE RETURNS and they think there is nothing involved in sending it back. Oh So Very Wrong.

3. EBay doesn't monitor the reasons a buyer gives for a request to return an item. If it says Not as Described or Doesn't Match...that is automatic and then the seller is left to defend themselves agains unscrupulous buyer who are working the system. All the buyer has to do is just sit back and wait for the refund.

4. EBay is demaning more and more of their sellers while at the same time charging more and more fees. Did you know that if a buyer wants to cancel a return after they have paid and before the item ships...if you agree to cancel the order, EBay charges you (the seller) a fee for refunding the money back to the buyer. I learned this the hard way. Also, if a buyer decides not to return an item after their request is made...you are still charged the amount of the return postage. Not Fair.

I have conveyed to EBay my thoughts on why they continue to lose market share and miss their quarterly projections...it happened again this quarter...is because more and more sellers are leaving due to the policies like MBG they have in place. No sellers, no buyers...and it doesn't work the other way around.

I have so much invested in selling on EBay that it will be awhile before I can be totally gone...until then, I have stopped buying on EBay totally which is hurting other sellers. And I am taking more and more of my listing to other sites. Perhaps I will run into the same or similar problem...but if EBay won't stand by me...then I can't stand with EBay.

Very true, but you CAN set your Buyers' Preferences. It weeds out the bulk of bad buyers, and the very new buyers so you can deal with the ones after that. A very small percentage of the problem kids remain. You can find that in your 'Account' drop-down. It Really works!

Sorry but it is me again...I am a Top Rated Seller and as such I am allowed to deduct up to 50% of the purchase price when I dispute a return...and I have disputed all of them because they are being done by unscrupulous buyer who know how to... and who are...working the EBay system. It is absolutely not about the money...but when they call into question my integrity as a seller...then it become personal and I always do and always will...defend myself. I know a lot of these buyer are hoping for the seller to chose Option 1 on the return board..."Issue refund now and the buyer keeps the item". Not going to happen. When they lie, I call them out. What diasppoints me so much is that EBay almost always agrees with me when I argue my cases...but then, they turn around and refund the buyer all of their money under the MBG when I have made it clear that the No. 1 reason given for the MBG is that they didn't get what they ordered. Well they did, they did get what they ordered, at least from me, and are just misrepresenting the reasons in hopes of scoring on the seller. EBay doesn't monitor the reasons for a return and so you have to stick you head in there and just say NO...this is not the case. EBay should take the money they give back to unscrupulous buyer for unscrupulous returns and give it to sellers in the form of reduced fees.

I knooooow! I got pooped just reading all that! When I got burned for over 2K and after going through all the steps I needed to do through the system and lost, I took it to the buyer directly. I got a cashiers' check the next day. Bullies rarely can take it themselves when confronted. No yelling, no cursing, etc. "Just the facts, mam, just the facts..."

And it's going to get worse. I did the same thing for the same reason. I had a great time, but it's time to move on. Snif.... I'm so sad, but it's better than selling things for 5 bucks , or lower, because I'm AFRAID to go higher. Life's too short and there's other venues that fit. (I know: It's not that life's too short, it's because death is so long! (Har-de-har)
