New issue 972 by eido...@gmail.com: Improve Ratings Visibility
http://code.google.com/p/quodlibet/issues/detail?id=972

My first real mass tagging experience was with media monkey back when I
used windows. It used a granularity of 10 for ratings, and I spent a good
bit of time rating my music in this format. I was very happy to see that
quodlibet is configurable to use the same granularity, but I find it nearly
impossible to tell at a glance what the rating is of a track by looking at
the little music notes. Even worse is that since the ratings are not kept
in the tags of the songs, I haven't found an easy way to see the definitive
rating of a track other than to carefully count.

In a best case scenario I'd love to see the use of half stars which lets
you see the same granularity in half the space and much easier to decipher
at a glance. I realize that this wouldn't be easy to implement and I am in
the minority of people using 1/10 increments, so I really don't expect this
wish to come true.

A more reasonable approach would be to add a bullet or highlight the stored
rating in the ratings flyout. Just something to show the stored rating
easily. Of course an option in the config file to just show the actual
number instead of a graphic would also work.

I made a little mock-up of the different ideas for clarity.

Thanks Nick,
I did see that and thought this was different enough for a separate ticket.
Please advise if I was wrong. Don't want to be a repeat offender.

No it's fine - this ticket just reminded me that there's a similar one open.

Also, QL can save ratings to songs: enable Preferences->Tags->Ratings->Save
ratings and play counts

I have that enabled, but didn't realize it was even working because you
don't see them in the tag editor. Using puddletag I was able to see them.

The format is fine for vorbis, but it would be a pain to try and decipher
the id3v2 format all the time. Is Issue 48 related to not seeing these tags?

I agree that although POPM is kind of a standard, its implementation is
enough of a mess wrt interoperability between apps that personally I'd
rather not use it.

Here's what I'd really like:
1-5 stars in the UI, both display and editing
settable via mouse right-click or keybindings e.g. Ctrl-0(-5)
actually stored in TXXX Rating as a scale 0-100
converting the stars to 0/20/40/60/80/100

This is how I've got Foobar2000 (with QuickTags), MusicBee and Squeezebox
working with my FLAC files, and it would be so sweet to just convert to MP3
and keep the ratings intact.

And here's what I'd really really like
for QL to let the user configure the Ratings field
basically I think it would be enough to just have the above
or POPM
using MP3Tag's naming convention for the different flavors of POPM
Rating WMP
Rating MM
Rating WINAMP
Populimeter (Generic POPM, which is how QL's tags appear now)

Personally I think the current situation is simply creating another
just-enough-of-a-variation to be a whole new "proprietary" Ratings tag
format, despite the fact that POPM is a "standard" it really doesn't
accomplish what a standard should.
