Itis just under a week since players were finally able to dive into Resident Evil Village with the game's May 7 release date. Over that time, Resident Evil fans are still piecing together the game's plot and trying to find all the secrets hidden within the lycan-filled European village. Yet, other fans are more interested in making their own kind of horror with mods, and a newly released one for Resident Evil Village is the stuff of nightmares.
Since the release of Resident Evil Village, there has been a ridiculous amount of modding that has spun the franchise on its head. Fans have gone above and beyond to make some wild model swaps to create either their worst nightmare, or weirdest fantasy. With one of the more notable Resident Evil Village mods being Chris Redfield's head on Ethan Winters' baby, a newly released one is swapping the roles.
JTeghius "JTegh" Kittius, the modder responsible for bringing baby Chris Redfield to the world, has now opted to make sure the Resident Evil universe is balanced with Rosemary Winters taking Chris Redfield's body. Much like Jtegh's previous mod, this one also produces a new kind of horror experience fans were not expecting. Yet, having an oversized baby head on a fully grown man's body may be more uncomfortable based on the footage below.
It is definitely quite the sight to see Rose seemingly become the villain of this game, having the brutal opening recreated with an abundance of absurdity. While strange, it does add some levity to an otherwise heavy game as Ethan must rescue his daughter from a terrifying cult. Resident Evil Village is definitely willing to take some gruesome chances with the horror elements alongside some seemingly odd turns with familiar franchise mechanics.
For those not interested in modding Resident Evil Village to find a new kind of horror, the game itself has plenty of frightening moments to keep players hooked. Resident Evil Village has been a considerable success for publisher Capcom, with the game already hitting some big franchise milestones. Due in part to the big opening week sales of Resident Evil Village, Capcom confirms that the Resident Evil franchise as a whole has exceeded 100 million units shipped over the 25-year long history of the series.
With it still being very early days for the Resident Evil Village modding scene, there will inevitably be more to come to take Capcom's recent survival horror title to some wild places. The most likely mod to make big waves in the community will involve the breakout star of Resident Evil Village: Ethan's hands. Hopefully, somebody out there will take the time to try and help the most suffering hands in gaming history.
A new Resident Evil Village mod has changed the appearance of one of the game's monsters during a boss fight in response to Capcom being accused of copyright infringement. Although it is still new, the game saw success on its own almost instantaneously. Resident Evil Village became one of Twitch's most viewed games the month of its release, being the only single-player game to make the list, and it was on top of the list on the UK sales charts that month.
Resident Evil Village launched in early May 2021 and immediately captured the interest of long-time and new Resident Evil fans. This newest game continues the story of Ethan Winters and his wife, Mia, from Resident Evil: Biohazard, but it takes place three years later. This first-person game starts with Ethan being kidnapped by a familiar face, Chris Redfield, and abandoned in a European village. As players explore the village looking for a way out and his family, they have to fight their way through werewolves, dolls and everyone's newest favorite vampire, who may have been a jazz singer.
The mod was created by Pumpkinhook and posted on Nexus Mods under the name "Copyright Free Sturm" (via IGN). Pumpkinhook describes the mod as "A copyright free version of Sturm! no copyright infringement here!" Sturm is a test subject of one of the four village residents, Heisenberg, and the player encounters them during the factory leg of the game. However, with this mod active, players will no longer see Sturm when the boss battle arrives. Instead, they will see a literal white pedestal fan gliding toward Ethan. Though the bosses turn into something else once they're killed, gamers probably never expected to fight a fan as a boss.
Sturm is one of Heisenberg's experiments with machine parts. They had most of their torso replaced with an aircraft engine and propeller. They no longer really have arms or a head and most of their upper body is machine. The lower body is two working human legs. Richard Raaphorst pointed out this monster's resemblance to a monster he created for the 2013 horror movie Frankenstein's Army. In an interview with Eurogamer (quoted by IGN), Raaphorst explained that it's more than just the base design, but the overall scene and the end of the fight. Capcom never responded to the allegations. With DLC for the game already in development, Capcom may just be trying to move forward and avoid any attention that may paint the game negatively.
There are a lot of interesting mods for Resident Evil Village even though the game is still relatively new. Capcom being accused of copyright infringement is a serious issue, but this mod band-aids that issue in a unique way. It might break the immersion of Capcom's beloved horror game, but it certainly makes for an amusing resolution to a potentially serious legal issue.
Resident Evil Village is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC. Players who have purchased the Xbox One or PS4 versions of the game receive a free next-gen upgrade.
The release of Resident Evil Village is still a handful of days away, but mods are already taking things to another level with one in particular placing Barney the Dinosaur as an enemy type. Barney has maintained his status as a pop culture staple for nearly 30 years, first debuting in PBS' Barney & Friends in 1992. There are memes and such that make him seem scary, but how much terror can a purple dinosaur with flat teeth conjure up?
Resident Evil obviously has the answer. In the last few months, RE Village managed to subvert expectations and toy with emotions in a way the franchise arguably hasn't in the past. And it all stemmed from marketing revolving around one central figure - Lady Dimitrescu. The tall vampire lady may very well go down as one of the brand's scariest villains to date. Zombies are played out, werewolves will eventually reach that same threshold, and the likes of RE3's Nemesis are designed to induce nothing but terror. Akin to other vampiric figures of yore, Lady Dimitrescu is alluring, captivating. Online chatter suggests fans can't wait to encounter her in-game, even when she's at her most terrifying, overly long claws and all. But even the countess is no match for Barney the Dinosaur.
Capcom recently hosted its final Resident Evil Village demo, so some players chose to make the most of it. Twitter user Marcos RC went above and beyond, though, evidenced by a Barney-starring mod shared on social media. Marcus RC's mod substitutes RE Village enemies with the friendly dinosaur in the cellar area of Castle Dimitrescu. It's a genuinely frightening sight to behold. In almost any other circumstance, many would consider Barney a welcoming sight, but there are three of them in this mod. And one appears to be laughing... Suffice it to say, Barney's never been more terrifying.
This is rather eerie on its own, but craziest of all is that such a mod sets precedent. First, someone turned the docile Barney into a Resident Evil villain. Who might be next, though? Pikachu, Blue from Blue's Clues, the Teletubbies - the latter of whom are creepy as is? Hopefully, turning childhood safe spaces on their head won't become commonplace once RE Village's modding community starts getting its feet wet. Five Nights at Freddy's has caused enough distress.
RE Village aims to conjure up plenty of nightmare fuel all on its own. Lady Dimitrescu isn't the only new mark of terror on the block, either. Werewolves are making their franchise debut and the eerie village setting will likely boast several other horrors that Capcom has yet to unveil.
