Many times the decision to quit smoking is made in haste, usually
fueled by anger or frustration. How many people angrily or disgustedly
crush a pack of cigarettes in their hands and throw the pack out a
window? It is an impulse and many times the person is stops to buy
more cigarettes when the reality of the situation sets in.
A lot can be accomplished with anger or the energy built up over time
with the frustration of living with a tobacco addiction. It's okay to
be angry and to vent your frustration. We don't need to go into the
many ways tobacco companies lied and manipulated for years, it is
sufficient to say many smokers are justified in their anger. Justified
or not, the real question is, what are you going to do to help
yourself?
You'd love to quit smoking, great! But you may not know exactly how to
go about it. There is help, you know. Many people have quit smoking
and you can learn from their experiences. There are also organizations
that offer free advice as well, like the Lung Association, for
instance.
As a clinical hypnotherapist I learned a lot by watching the many
inventive ways people dealt with their smoking problem. One thing I
can tell you is that the ones who were the most successful had a plan
and had talked to an expert or other people who had kicked the habit.
The most important point I could make would be the old saying, "Those
who fail to plan, plan to fail." My smoking cessation clients who were
the most successful had thought about their smoking problem and made
plans for how they would deal with different situations that made them
smoke more. A plan doesn't have to be elaborate, but it does have to
identify your strengths and weaknesses and have steps you can take to
manage both. If you're going to put the effort into quitting smoking,
then you deserve a fighting chance. Give yourself a
plan.
