In the late-19th century, the south shore region of Lake Erie became a popular vacation destination for the emerging middle-class in the United States. The Lake's islands, such as Kelleys Island and South Bass Island, were gaining a reputation for their freshwater bathing resorts.[8] The Cedar Point peninsula, named for its abundance of cedar trees, was originally known for its fishing. Local fishermen leased land and built living quarters there.[9] Sandusky, which featured an important shipping harbor and two railroads, transformed into a major economic center over the next three decades.[10] Railroad and steamship travel supported an emerging tourism industry, and rapid development of the area began.[11]
Representatives of the Lake Erie and Western Railroad purchased the peninsula for US$256,000 (equivalent to about $9,005,100 in 2022) in 1897 and formed the Cedar Point Pleasure Resort Company.[17][18] The company appointed George A. Boeckling, a businessman from Indiana, as the park's new manager. Under his tenure, the peninsula was transformed from a picnic ground into a nationally recognized amusement park and resort destination.[8][12]
Cedar Point's Express Hotel, formerly Breakers Express, is a hotel located one mile (one point six kilometres) from Cedar Point. Opened in 2000, it is the closest off-site hotel to the peninsula and includes over 400 guest rooms.[133][134]
Cedar Point has had a cultural influence on American society as evidenced in many forms of media such as books, television, and film. In the 1940 biographical film Knute Rockne, All American documenting the life of famous Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, Cedar Point is featured at a pivotal point in the story. In 1913, Knute works as a lifeguard on a beach at Cedar Point, where he and his college roommate Gus Dorais worked on the forward pass. The concept, which was first used in a scrimmage game at Cedar Point, would revolutionize the sport and the film would later be preserved in the Library of Congress National Film Registry.[143][144] In 2004, an independently produced film, Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind: Infestation From Mars, was shot at several historic locations around Sandusky including Cedar Point. Dick Kinzel, CEO of Cedar Fair at the time, had a brief speaking role in the film.[145]
The University of Nebraska's Cedar Point Biological Station (CPBS) is a field research facility and experiential classroom. CPBS is located off campus in western Nebraska, near Lake McConaughy and the city of Ogallala. The station sits in the heart of the western high plains near the juncture of tall grass and short grass prairie, on the south edge of the Sandhills and the North Platte River valley. The success of the Cedar Point Experience draws on the wide variety of local habitats with an abundance and diversity of flora and fauna.
Cedar Point Biological Station is part of Nebraska's School of Biological Sciences and is open for research and educational activities from approximately May 1st to August 15th and for individual events through mid October. We offer over 900 acres of UNL owned Prairie and redcedar-filled canyons, comfortable housing, dining facilities during the summer field season, a library, classroom spaces, research labs, WiFi, and a friendly, inviting atmosphere which leads to regular collaborations among our users. Each summer the School of Biological Sciences offers eight experience-based field courses in biology that focus on student-based research.

Posted August 8, 2002 at 4:05 PMI'm looking for input from people on where to go for a week long vacation next year. My family did Orlando this year, so that's out until next year. The finalists are the Williamsburg, Va. area (Busch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Virginia Beach), and the Sandusky, Ohio area (Cedar Point, Six Flags). I love coasters. Can anyone please comment on positives/negatives of both areas? What else is there to do around Sandusky? When is the best time to go to Cedar Point and Busch Gardens. Thanks.RELATED LINKS:

Posted August 8, 2002 at 4:59 PMI've never been to Williamsburg, but Cedar Point is DEFINITELY an awesome park, especially if you love roller coasters. The Magnum is magnificent, the Raptor is enrapturing, and you will have a great time all over this park. Plus, if you stay a few days, you can take the ferry to some of the nearby islands and ride a bike or golf cart around because no cars are allowed. Enjoy. Oh, btw, if you call 1-800-BUCKEYE, they will send you a book with some discount coupons for Cedar Point. From Denny Mac
Posted August 8, 2002 at 6:15 PMIve been to both places and Ceadr Point is the one to go to! No contest! From Anonymous
Posted August 8, 2002 at 7:57 PMI used to live close to both Busch Gardens and Kings Dominion and they are great parks. If you have a family that includes kids, Busch Gardens is definetly the better park. I have been to Cedar Point many times and it is mostly concrete and cheapo concession stands that serve blah food. Busch Gardens is a "theme" park made to look like old Europe. The layout of the park is nice (lots of trees and scenery - there is even a small river) and the design of the buildings and park is real nice. The food is great for a theme park and you have your choice of good Italian, Irish, French, German or American food. There are tons of cool gift shops and everyone is dressed in old century garb.
The park may not be packed with the type of roller coasters like at Cedar Point, but they have some damn good ones. The Loch-Ness Monster is a classic interlooping coaster. Alpengeist is good, as is the Big Bad Wolf. Also, Apollo's Chariot has decent drops. But don't forget that they have great shows and other "things" to do.
An added bonus is that you can see the huge Clydesdale horses in the park.
As far as things to do around the park there is Colonial Williamsburg (literally right next door to the park) which is packed with tours of houses, taverns and shops. It is still kept up like the 1700's with horses, carriages and everyone in colonial dress. The taverns even serve the same types of foods they ate back then. There is so much to do in Colonial Williamsburg and if you have kids they will get a kick out of going back in time. This is definetly something you will want to do if you go to Busch Gardens.
And not to far away is Kings Dominion which is an awesome park. They have alot of roller coasters and they are all decent. They have some interesting rides there. This is the best park in the east in my opinion.
Hope this helps and keep those hands up on whichever park and rollercoaster you end up on.From xavier xo

Posted August 9, 2002 at 12:13 AMYeah, someone has a LOT OF ROOM to call others stupid. I can barely see to type my eyes keep rolling back into my head reading so many uneducated pleas for CP acceptance. If you really want to make a good decision, then you have to decide what things you would rather have in a vacation. If you go to CP, you WILL get a lot of coasters, a zillion crappy flat rides and that's about it. SFWoA has some decent coasters too and has the animal section, which will help to keep you from getting tired of amusement parks. Now if you want a real THEME park, then you have to go to BGW. Kings Dominion is not too bad, but not as good as either Ohio park. Then you have to decide about the area. In Ohio there are about a zillion Hall of Fames and not a whole lot that seems to interesting to the average tourist after that. In Virginia you have Colonial Williamsburg, Civil War battlefields and Washington DC is not too far away.Personally, if I had never been to either, I would definitely do Virginia and spend a few days in DC. There is more to do there than in either Ohio OR Virginia. And from now on can we have HELPFUL advice? This blind devotion crap doesn't help anyone. Give reasons as to why you think Ohio or Virginia is a better place to SPEND A WHOLE WEEK. Complete sentences and proper punctuation also help sell your point better than freeform retardation does. ;-)From ryan saunders
Posted August 9, 2002 at 6:22 AMI have been 2 both and I would have 2 say there is more 2 do in Virginia. Even though Busch Gardens is not all that fun 2 be very honest with u. If u have kids, they have only one small kids section, as well as only a few roller coasters, with 2 being decent. Kings Dominion is right down the street basically so that would be a way better choice. Kings is the best park i have ever been 2 and yes i have been 2 Cedar Point twice. Kings has twelve roller coasters, with one of those being the HYPERSONIC XLC. U have 2 get on it so u can feel the rush throughout your body. That ride alone is enough 2 go 2 Virginia. Then again, Millennium force is enough 2 go 2 Cedar Point. I say go 2 both this summer. From Anonymous
Posted August 9, 2002 at 7:26 AMI have been to both, several times and I can asure you Busch Gardens is the altimate family destination, theres a little bit of everything to satisfy everyone, and don't forget Water Country is right down the street! It's also voted America's most beautiful theme park! No questions about it for family fun Williamsburg is the place. From Rebecca Kiessling
Posted August 9, 2002 at 8:23 AMI have been to both parks, and I would have to say that hands down, Cedar Point is the best park in the country! They have Camp Snoopy for the kids, a great new ice show that offers a break from the heat of the afternoon, and the best coaster you will find anywhere. NO coaster lover would be complete with out a ride on Millenium Force. This year's new Wicked Twister is also a great and fun rideFrom Anonymous
Posted August 9, 2002 at 10:19 AMBGW is BEST for families and those who want to view the 'most beautiful themepark in the world', although I would say Europa Park, Rust, Germany comes in a close second! Anyway, Virginia Beach sucks, why because down the road in Newport, is the US military naval base, the largest in the world, go figure! This means industrial, military base style city, with its usual unemployment and problems, e.g. crime rate, very high. Williamsburg, is a lovely, if not a little touristy place with great restaurants and local, old english style buildings from the colonial days. If visiting the area, make sure to go to the Outlet Mall, outside BGW, its the first exit before BGW on the freeway. But DO go to Washington D.C. and go to the Spy Museam ($9 adult) and the other massive attractions. Cedar Point, put simply, 'Whats the point in life, if you don't go to Cedar Point', phrase works well. Cedar Point, is the pinnacle of rollercoasters, worldwide, Millenium alone, would make the place worth a visit, but with so many attractions, not to mention 15 rollercoasters, all good, if not bloody excellent. Cleveland is a dump, industrial, Six Flags WOA is definitely worth a visit, great line-up, although make sure you go to SFWOA before CP, why cause' CP blows SFWOA out of the water, quite literally! From Robert Niles
Posted August 9, 2002 at 10:56 AMWell, Six Flags in Aurora is quite a ways away from Cedar Point in Sandusky, so I wouldn't try to do it on the same trip as Cedar Point--unless I was doing a theme park roadtrip across the midwest or something. (Man, *that's* another thread!)So, I'd give the nod to Williamsburg. Virginia Beach is no great thing, as has been pointed out. And Kings Dominion is located north of Richmond in Doswell, which is also a bit of a haul. But Williamsburg is also home to Colonial Williamsburg (I know... duh...) and a wealth of historic sites. Busch Gardens is one of my favorite parks, for its blend of top-quality theme and excellent thrill rides. For a one-week, relaxing but fun family vacation, I'd heartily recommend Williamsburg. (And, if I can take a moment to pimp the money-making section of this site, we've got a whole page devoted to finding hotels in the area.)After that, though, I think a roadtrip across the great parks of the midwest would be a blast. Some people don't have the stomach for roadtrips, though. Even some people who have no problem with coasters (go figure...). But if that's not an issue I think you could have a grand time going from Kings Island to Cedar Point to Great America.

Posted August 10, 2002 at 10:01 AMHey at least it's a break from the regular Cedar Point vs. Six Flags smackdown. (In the words of Kevin: LOL!)Seriously, the only way that Cedar Point provides for a weeklong vacation is if you've got a boat on the marina, and you're spending a few days out on the lake. Not a bad way to spend a vacation, but not my first choice, either.Williamsburg's simply got more to do, of a higher quality, than the Sandusky area offers. Again, that's not to say you couldn't have a good time in Sandusky. Or that the midwest theme park roadtrip wouldn't be a blast. But, as a parent who gets only two weeks of vacation a year, I'd much prefer that my kids see Williamsburg before I haul them around the midwest to ride roller coasters. Sure, I like coasters, but Busch Gardens has got enough to keep me satisfied for one trip.

Posted August 12, 2002 at 10:14 AMYou want some truth - Go to WILLIAMSBURG! My husband and I vactioned there for our honeymoon last year, and although they do not have as many coasters as Cedar Point, they are smoother and much more enjoyable to ride. I know because we just went to Cedar Point this past weekend (Aug 9th & 10th) and had the WORST time ever! On a scale from 1-10, Cedar Point = 4, Busch Gardens = 9! The Raptor at Cedar Point gave me a headache for 3 hours and The Mantis jarred my husband so much he almost threw up! And we're average sized people: I'm 5'5", 135 lbs... he's 6'1", 210lbs. The bathrooms had mold around the sinks at Cedar Point and we had 3 roller coasters with mechanical problems on Friday alone - The Mantis had people stuck on the track at 10:30am! I wish I could give you my phone number to call me so that I could tell you in person and you would believe me, but know this - I am 26 years old and in the rest of my lifetime, I will never recommend Cedar Point to family, friends, or the general public, and I will never be back. I will, however, visit Busch Gardens again (and it's a 13 hour drive for us vs 3 1/2 to Cedar Point - we're from lower Michigan), and I would even like to go to Pennsylvania to either Hershey Park or a couple others that are known for coasters. I hope that my letter of the true side of both will give you some insight. If you decide to go to Cedar Point, good luck to you! I hope your experience is more enjoyable than ours was! From Ken McMahon
Posted August 12, 2002 at 11:13 AMYou have two very good potential destinations in VA and OH. I agree with many of the comments concerning both destinations. For the history, clearly the VA area (be it DC or the surrounding areas) has the Ohio area beat. Williamsburg and the rest of the DC area provide several days worth of non-coaster options. The coasters in the Virginia area are enough to meet the needs of most folks. I think that your decision should be based on the make-up of your family and their desires (do they all like roller coasters as a number one priority for this vacation or do they have a multitude of interests). While you have listed two options, either Sandusky, Ohio or Virginia there may be other options. One other thought to consider would be to fly into Columbus, OH putting you within a 2 - 2 1/2 hour drive of Kings Island, Cedar Point and Six Flags. There are water parks inside of the three parks -- Cedar Point for an extra fee. Typically, flying into Columbus is less expensive that flying into Cleveland or Detroit (your primary options when Sandusky is your destination). As has been mentioned, you can visit COSI a science museum in Columbus that kids (3 - 12) tend to really enjoy, the Football Hall of Fame in Canton (2+ hours), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland (2 hours and 15 minutes or so) and other destinations within a couple of hours including Lake Erie and the Islands. The parks are all less busy in Early June and Late August than they are from Late June through Early August. For coasters, this trio of parks presents a good combination of options. There are other destinations as well (as I mentioned above). If you are particularly interested in Lake Erie activities, the Lake does not reach a comfortable swimming temperature until very late June. Good luck in your selection for next summer. By the way, I have been to many, many amusement parks including Cedar Point multiple times. While you will have to wait in some long lines at Cedar Point -- especially during the busy two months mentioned above -- I have never experienced multiple rides closed, etc. like the writer mentioned in an earlier append. As a final note, the parks are typically less crowded during the middle of the week, therefore, you may want to plan your non-coaster activities on the weekend and coasters during the week -- regardless of your choice of destinations... Posted August 12, 2002 at 11:41 AMBusch Gardens coasters are great and so are Cedar Point. I think the train ride at Busch makes it a better park and also the Clydesdale's like to eat grass and deliver a pony ride. From Anonymous
Posted August 12, 2002 at 1:04 PMI have only been to Cedar Point, but I can say that it is a great park if you are going there with or without kids. They have Camp Snoopy with lots of fun rides for the kids along with the old Kiddie Kingdom. The roller coasters are fun...I would recommend Magnum, Raptor, Millemiun Force, and Wicked Twister. They also have a good varity of shows. Soak City is another great part of the park. You can go to the park one day and then the next go to Soak City. It includes a wave action pool with tons of slides and one of the pools has a swim up bar in it. You can also go to the beach. Cedar Point also has Go-Karts and putt-putt golf in their challenge park. From Anonymous
Posted August 13, 2002 at 12:05 PMForget them both and go to SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN. It's not as 'themed' as some of the other parks, but you CANNOT compare the coaster lineup!! This ride had MANY problems at first, but is now up and running. From Peter Longwood
Posted August 13, 2002 at 4:31 PMIn my opinion, if you have kids, Williamsburg is a better family locale. CP is great, but the lines are long and it does have a "county fair" feeling. Also, I have found Ohio to have a higher "redneck factor", and have found the people in the South to be friendlier than the Midwest. From Kevin Baxter

Posted August 14, 2002 at 4:56 AMI've never been to CP but have been to BG Williamsburg many times. Williamsburg is great for an affordable family vacation. Aside from BG, there is also Water Country USA. Although I've only been to WCUSA once, this seems like a great change of pace and a good place to cool off. Busch offers hopper passes so you can hop between parks (only about five minutes apart). I think Steve may be right about most kids not being interested in the historical offerings in Williamsburg but I have to disagree that there is nothing else to do. Other family members may enjoy shopping, go-carts, miniature golf; all of which are within a short driving distance from any hotel in the area. We like to take our bicycles (you can rent them there, too) and ride through Colonial Williamsburg and the College Campus. Right price = FREE (unless you have to rent bikes). It is mostly flat terrain but there are some small hills that can be found. Virginia Beach is within driving distance (45 to 50 minutes) as well as many maritime and air and space museums (Norfolk and Hampton). I think a vacation is what you make it, regardless of location. P.S. Cedar Point is one park that I really want to visit soon. From Anonymous
Posted August 14, 2002 at 6:28 PMI live in Richmond, VA. Drove to Cleveland last week and went to CP on Friday. Cedar Point is a must-see on any true enthusiast's list, and we hope to go again someday. There were some problems, like MF breaking down, but it was a great day.
That said, a family vacation is probably better at Williamsburg, there is much more to do outside of the parks in Central Virginia than there is in northern Ohio. The perfect compromise is find a way to go to both. From Anonymous
Posted August 14, 2002 at 11:45 PMmy suggestion--spend a few days in williamsburg area--busch gardens, colonial williamsburg, etc.--then a couple days in DC. Lots to see in DC--much of it free--then go spend some time on the blue ridge parkway. Blue ridge parkway-skyline drive only about 60 miles from DC--good way to finish off trip with great scenery away from the crowds. From Kevin Baxter
Posted August 15, 2002 at 1:35 AMPersonally, I don't think kids should have a say when it comes to historic sites. TAKE THEM REGARDLESS!! Unless you want to have stupid kids. I see many teenage posters on here who could obviously have used a little more education in their vacations. There is more to life than roller coasters and there is far more to this country than amusement parks. From Mike K
Posted August 15, 2002 at 2:50 PMI say go to Cedar Point. The last time I went to Williamsburg was a about 5 years ago, so I don't really remember. But Cedar Point is a great park, it has the best coasters, award winning entertainment, and it has recieve the Golden Ticket Award from Amusement Today for the past three years!!! Also, if you will be visiting next year there should be another fantastic coaster. Visit here for more info: But Williamsburg I do remember was also a great park. Overall a great park. From Anonymous
Posted August 23, 2002 at 5:38 PMDefinitely Busch Gardens Williamsburg is the better park. The atmosphere is much better than Cedar Point. Cedar Point puts most of their effort into coasters while Busch is a more well rounded park. The themeing is amazing and I would say only surpased by Island's of Adventure. They only have 4 coasters but they are all great! While Cedar Point will soon have 16 coasters you can't really say that every coaster is just as good as the next while at Busch you could call every coaster your favorite. At Busch they only build coasters that will fit their park. It has been called the most beautiful park for many years. But if you really want lots of coasters Cedar Point really can't be beat in that department. From Steve Carter
