I want to add a post process effect to an actor. When the player overlaps the sphere radius, the effect begins to play. For this I set this blueprint - and it kind of works. But only for a single tick. After this, the effect disappears.
the easiest method to get the desired effect in my opinion would be to use post process blend weight and a timeline. the drawback here is that you need to setup everything beforehand and the transition is set. there is another method where you can set the blend based on the distance to the other actor but its been awhile so ill have to try to work it out again, im pretty sure its based on tick though.
anyways in the picture below you will see how i set it up. on overlap with another third person character (you could set this to whatever you like) it plays the timeline from the start. the timeline is just a simple 0-1 value over 1 second, and the update just sets the blend weight. on end overlap we do basically the same thing but reversing the process. now for this to work you will need to set the post process settings for the characters camera to your desired effect and you will also need to set the initial blend weight to 0.
But one question about your solution - how do I get this camera values like you have on the right side?
Maybe I should say at least a bit more about my setup. I have several, stationary characters placed in the world. All inherit in a blueprint - these actors have a sphere trigger as shown above.
How do I talk to the post process volumes?
to get the camera values in the details panel all you need to do is select the characters camera component, in this case i was working in a third person character (of course you will need to be modifying values in the players camera). i made a few adjustments to the script and posted it below, if your using it in an enemy bp then you could use the setup below, if your using it in the character bp then the above may be better. you may also want to add in some checks as well to make sure that the timeline doesnt called if multiple enemies begin overlap.
so the way this all works is that it doesnt mess with your post process volumes in your level it modifies the post process settings in the characters camera which blend out and end up overriding your scene post process. if your scene post process is vital to the look of your game this may not be the best way to go.
I have a post process volume in my scene (underwater effect) that works great in my third person game. I want to add it to a blueprint, however the only post process I can add to a blueprint does not have a bounding box. I need this bounding box as it detects when the camera (not player) enters the water. I tried creating a separate collision box and detecting on overlap begin/end to enable and disable the post process, however it would turn on post process when the player entered the water even if the camera was out of the water.
The most efficient way to do this would be to add the Post Process Volume with its bounding box at the waters surface. You will want test the height at which the post processing is applied to fine tune the transition, sort of like a buffer zone so it is a clean and accurate effect.
To properly answer the question for anyone who wants to do this in the future, you will need a collision shape in your blueprint, most likely the same trigger that you use to set your water. If you add a post process component into your blueprint and then make your collision shape the parent of it, it will act as the volume for the PP.
Looking at the queries I realized, this is definitely a candidate for post-processing using a base search. I redefined the panels, by creating a base search (which is same as Panel - and then subsequently updated all the Panels to use the base search for charting.
And likewise, I have set up all other panels. But I noticed my dashboard with post processing searches are running extremely slower than individual search. What am I doing wrong?
If I were to measure the performance with a timer, they are at least 3 times slower than individual searches. Thoughts?
The best way to utilize the post-process feature is to do at least some level of aggregation on the base search. The post process search has limitation of number of results that it returns and an aggregation will mitigate that. By seeing the you base search you're not doing any aggregation there. If you can share your actual searches (for all panels/variations available), we can suggest an aggregation which will work in your case and should improve the performance.
Post process search are inherently slower than individual. Typically I point people to post process searches when users or dashboards is maxing out system or user level concurrent searches. In short Post process search will always be slower, except for a very some set of cases.
Slowness/performance of Post process search isn't well documented, but is a limitation/pitfall of using the technique. It commonly known among Splunk veterans. Not to say you cant optimize your base search to increase efficiency.
PostProcess sometimes helps for similar searches. But, in many cases, it becomes slower.
Even when aggregation search is used at base-search, it is still possible to make it slower. It depends on data and searches for a dashboards, either PostProcess got benefit or not.
There doesn't seem to be much documentation that confirms whether you can or can't, so any ideas or feedback is welcome! Trying to look for options that work well with Trimble but we want to move away from using TerraFlex/TerraSync (it is not user friendly for post-processing).
I finally chatted with ESRI about it - it was a little confusing because "post-processing" is referred to in the Differential Corrections sections of the article. It turns out that when they refer to post-processing, they are just talking about traditional geoprocessing. In Field Maps, it's going to rely on the precision of the GPS unit or receiver to gather data.
Note that by default, your custom effect does not run if you just add it to a Volume. You also need to add the effect to your Project's list of supported effects. (it's the same list used to order the effect, see the Effect Ordering section).
Now you can add the GrayScale post-process override to a Volumes in the Scene. To change the effect settings, click the small all text just below the foldout arrow and adjust with the Intensity slider.
This is the C# Custom Post Process file. Custom post-process effects store both configuration data and logic in the same class. To create the settings for the effect, you can either use a pre-existing class that inherits from VolumeParameter, or, if you want to use a property that the pre-existing classes do not include, create a new class that inherits from VolumeParameter.
HDRP calls the IsActive()function before the Render function to process the effect. If this function returns false, HDRP does not process the effect. It is good practice to check every property configuration where the effect either breaks or does nothing. In this example, IsActive() makes sure that HDRP can find the GrayScale.shader and that the intensity is greater than 0.
Note: When you enable Temporal anti-aliasing (TAA), HDRP applies TAA between the injection points BeforeTAA and beforePostProcess. When you use Depth Of Field and enable its Physically Based property, HDRP performs a second TAA pass to perform temporal accumulation for this effect.
The Setup, Render, and Cleanup functions allocate, use, and release the resources that the effect needs. The only resource that the above script example uses is a single Material. This example creates the Material in Setup and, in Cleanup, uses CoreUtils.Destroy() to release the Material.
In the Render function, you have access to a CommandBuffer which you can use to enqueue tasks for HDRP to execute. You can use CommandBuffer.Blit here to render a fullscreen quad. When you use the Blit function, Unity binds the source buffer in parameter to the _MainTex property in the shader. For this to happen, you need to declare the _MainTex property in the Properties section of the shader.
HDRP gives you total control over the vertex and fragment Shader so you can edit both of them to suit your needs. Note that there are a number of utility functions in Common.hlsl and Color.hlsl that the Shader includes by default. This means that you have access to these utility functions in your effect. For example, the GrayScale Shader uses the Luminance() function to convert a linear RGB value to its luminance equivalent.
If none of your Scenes reference the Shader, Unity does not build the Shader and the effect does not work when you run your application outside of the Editor. To resolve this, either add the Shader to a Resources folder, or go to Edit > Project Settings > Graphics and add the Shader to the Always Included Shaders list.
By default, Unity automatically creates an editor for classes but, if you want more control over how Unity displays certain properties, you can create a custom editor. If you do create a custom editor script, make sure to put it in a folder named Editor.
This custom editor is not really useful as it produces the same result as the editor that Unity creates. Custom Volume component editors also support an additonal properties toggle. To add it, you have to set hasAdvancedMode override to true. Then, inside the OnInspectorGUI, you can use the isInAdvancedMode boolean to display more properties.
