Decades later, it is this communication gap between the government and the public that Pandey bridges through the social media handles of the Mumbai, Thane and Pune police, the municipal corporations of Mumbai and Pune, the government railway police and more.

"We are not conditioned to appreciate the police," Pandey tells Mrigank Warrier. "Criticism is much easier. Because of a couple of black sheep, so many good policemen were being deprived of appreciation. That is a thing of the past; it is being taken care of now." And how.

"I wanted to find a police chowky before getting off. I wasn't looking for just any support or shelter; I was looking for a policeman," Pandey recalls. That a policeman is a beacon of security and police stations are safe spaces is a recurring motif in Mumbai police tweets

Naturally, nothing is posted without approval from the highest echelons of the IAS and IPS. However closely her team works with police and civic officials, they know their role is a creative one. The buck stops elsewhere.

Alluding to Pandey being a former journalist, she alleged that this was why the Mumbai police was 'SO lightening (sic) quick to respond to every tweet or post on SM by Bollywood selected Bollywood actors but is completely deaf to requests of help by ordinary citizens.

#ArrestSunchikaPandey even became a trending hashtag. It was a dark phase, she says. A director general of police told her: 'Sunchika, the people who are saying these things are people who don't even know you. We know your work and we are very proud of it. Keep going.'

On Valentine's Day, the Mumbai Police reminded people not to forget taking precautions against the Covid-19 pandemic. In a sweet and cute message on Twitter, the Mumbai Police wrote: "Distance makes love grow stronger". The funny gif shows a boy and a girl with masks and six hearts between them. Along with the gif it said, "All we need is love, a mask and six feet of distance this Valentine's Day".

The official Twitter handle of the city's police chief, Param Bir Singh also carried a similar message for couples on Valentine's Day. "The three magical words everyone wants to hear this Valentine's Day - 'Safety Comes First'", it said. The picture along with the message has "21/2 Akshar prem ke, 2 Gaz safety ke" printed on it.

Mumbai Police's social media game has always been on point, the same is justified by its quirky posts on Twitter. This time around, Twitterati spotted a tweet posted from the official Mumbai Police handle that aptly exhibited Mumbai's Police's take on the raging 'If you don't love me' memes.

For instance - the G.O.A.T. video, which was sent by the DCP, Sunchika says the sweet moment was actually a coincidence, but that's something they know people would love, and it also recreates the message, which remains the same whether the communicated online or offline.

Many police members are aged between 20 and 30 and understand the digital culture well. "It is a very closely knitted group that we have and Mumbai Police is as involved in this as any creative person on my team is," Sunchika asserts.

Following the murder of Shabir Ibrahim, Surve's fellow accomplices began to fall off one by one. Noticing this, Surve laid low. Meanwhile, local law enforcement was preparing operations to reduce persistent mob violence with an onslaught of targeted assassinations. Inspectors Isaque Bagwan and Raja Tambhat, with Senior Inspector Y. D. Bhide, was put in charge of taking down Surve.[1] Surve was killed in 1982 by the Maharashtra police which is regarded as Mumbai's first encounter killing.[2][3]

The group's first robbery took place on 5 April 1980, in which they stole an Ambassador car. The vehicle was later used to loot Rs 5,700 from the Laxmi Trading Company near Currey Road. On 15 April, Surve and his associates brutally assaulted and nearly killed Sheikh Aziz, an enemy of Sheikh Munir, near Kala Killa in the Dharavi slum. On 30 April, they stabbed a police constable when he was escorting rival Vijay Ghadge to a police station in Dadar.[4]

The group's various successful heists and robberies brought a tremendous amount of attention. As a result, the police were put under great pressure to deal with Surve, and they launched Operation Manya Surve to capture and curb his criminal activities.[4]

On 22 June 1981, Sheikh Munir was picked up from a chemical company near Kalyan. A few days later, Dayanand and Parshuram Katkar were arrested at a lodge in Goregoan. Anticipating his capture, Surve slipped into an aide's hideout in Bhiwandi but quickly fled on 19 November 1981. When police finally broke into the apartment, they recovered a hand grenade, a country-made revolver, and live ammunition.[4]

Surve was finished after systematic police operations led to a crackdown of his criminal enterprise. After the arrest of his cohort Uday, he was the only remaining member of the group who was not in prison.[4]

On 11 January 1982, Surve took a taxi to the Ambedkar College junction in Wadala. It is believed Mumbai police received a tip from Dawood Ibrahim that Surve would be arriving at a beauty parlor near the Ambedkar College junction there.[4] It is also theorized that his girlfriend Vidya revealed his whereabouts at that time, as was shown in the movie Shootout at Wadala. At around 1:30 pm, 18 Crime Branch officers split into three teams and waited for him to arrive. After twenty minutes, Surve was spotted exiting a taxi to pick up his girlfriend Vidya.[4]

After noticing several men closing in on him and taking positions, Surve pulled out his Webley & Scott revolver. However, before he could fire a shot, police officers Raja Tambat and Isaque Bagwan fired five bullets into his chest and shoulder.[4]

Surve's death became known as Mumbai's first recorded encounter killing.[2][3] The rate of encounter killings increased in the late 1980s and further rose after the 1993 Mumbai bombings; a total of 622 alleged criminals were killed in police encounters from 1982 to 2004.[6][7]

"Tunisha Sharma used to work as an actress in a TV show. Tunisha Sharma and Sheezan Khan had a love affair. They had a breakup 15 days ago after which she died by suicide on the sets of her show," Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Chandrakant Jadhav said during a press conference here.

The police have registered a case of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Sheezan. Tunisha has worked with Sheezan as a co-actor in the show 'Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul.'

Sheezan's lawyer, Sharad Rai has termed the allegations as 'baseless.' "Whatever has happened, police and court are working. He (Sheezan Khan) has been produced in court. Allegations against him are baseless."

Research suggests that psychiatric illness constitutes a major cause for nonfatal suicidal behavior. Risk factors for non-fatal suicide attempts by adults or youth include depression and other mental disorders.[6,7,8] Other risk factors are childhood adversities such as sexual/physical abuse, abuse of alcohol or drugs, stressful life events such as death of a loved one, loss of a job or relationship, financial bankruptcy, imminent criminal prosecution and suffering from, or having recently been diagnosed with, a terminal illness.[9] Essentially, people who attempt suicide are in need of help rather than punishment in view of association with a high psychiatric or psychological morbidity. The philosophical dilemmas surrounding the individual's right to life and death has been debated, albeit inconclusively, across several disciplines with differing outlook and perspectives.[10,11,12,13]

Further, many a times, the suicidal behavior is a result of a host of factors, some of which are outside a person's control, such as endogenous biological causes, socioeconomic causes such as poverty, frustration in love, setbacks in finances, family or other such reasons. Technically, it may not be considered as an offence against the state. On the contrary, the state itself may be indirectly responsible for the plight of the victim who is left with no other alternative, except but to end his life.[23]

First, the recent high profile cases of fasting unto death for a social or political cause. Anna Hazare announced the fast-until death in August, 2011 in Delhi to demand for a stronger Lokpal legislation empowering people. He continued it for 12 days with public support, after which the police intervened when physicians reported a danger to health. Similarly, Iron Lady of Manipur- Irom Chanu Sharmila's hunger strike started a decade back in order to demand the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the state of Manipur. She is being force-fed through a nasal tube and has been arrested/released multiple times by the police. These are the instances in which public persons or leaders stake their lives for a public cause or to protest the state's policy. State has intervened in most such cases especially when the health deteriorates or there is an immenent danger to life.

HYDERABAD: Goshamahal legislator from BJP, T. Raja Singh, has been booked by Mumbai police, who registered a case under section 153A (I)(a), for allegedly delivering a hate speech during a rally in Mumbai on January 29, a police official said.

Although the case was registered for his alleged provocative statements aimed at a particular community four days back, it came to light on Thursday. Singh reportedly sought a law on love jihad, cow slaughter and conversions at a rally organised by a local outfit, Hindu Sakal Samaj.
