I'm many hours into the game but I still struggle once in a while mid-fight with toggling my weapon between one-handed mode and two-handed mode. Just seemed a lot easier in other Souls Games and even in Bloodborne. I know you can remap a lot of the buttons but can we remap the buttons for two-handing our right-hander? My fingers do a kind of gymnastics every time; wondering if there is a more optimal button configuration for easily switching between one and two-handed weapon modes.

I switched X and triangle, maybe that can help? I did it because I was so used to X being the interact button having played dark souls for the past months and I didn't want to make mistakes around NPC's. Switching with holding x + r1 doesn't feel weird at all so perhaps try that, I don't think you can remap it to a single button without creating conflict or making other acctions more complicated.

Being able to wield a weapon with both hands is a core combat feature of just about every FromSoftware RPG. In Elden Ring just about every melee weapon can be one-handed, leaving the other hand free for items, shields, or abilities. When defense isn't your main concern, or when you want to use an Ash of War skill, two-handing weapons is typically the way to go.

Wielding a melee weapon with both hands not only increases overall damage output (at the cost of an off-hand), it also reduces the requirements needed to equip them. For example, a character with a low Strength stat can wield weapons normally unavailable to them, as long as they two-hand it. Though it functions the same way, the inputs for two-handing have changed for Elden Ring.

Updated June 6, 2024 by Erik Petrovich: Elden Ring is a complicated game, and many players who are jumping in before the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC launches may find themselves lost on the complex control scheme. In Elden Ring, two-handing weapons is as simple as entering a basic input, but this is not very clearly explained to players. This guide to how to two-hand in Elden Ring has been updated to include a video tutorial on the system, which briefly explains how to two-hand weapons, if you can two-hand weapons while dual-wielding, and why you might want to two-hand a weapon.

Because Elden Ring adds so many new combat mechanics, like stealth and the ability to jump, the button layout had to be changed to suit the more varied playstyle. In previous FromSoftware games, players needed only to press the Y button on an Xbox controller, or the Triangle button on a Playstation controller, to wield their right-handed weapon in both hands.

Elden Ring uses the A button/X button for jumping, so the input for interacting with the environment was changed to the Y button/Triangle, which previously was used for two-handing. Though the method for two-handing weapons in Elden Ring is more complicated than before, it also allows players to two-hand either their right or left-handed weapon, depending on which buttons they press.

To two-hand a weapon, first hold down the Y button/Triangle button. Depending on which hand's weapon you want to two-hand, press either the right or left shoulder buttons (R1 or L1) while holding down the Y button/Triangle button. As one might expect, pressing the right shoulder or R1 button two-hands weapon on your right, while pressing the left shoulder or L1 two-hands the weapon on your left.

The best time to two-hand a weapon is when you don't have to worry too much about defending yourself or when you are in close range and have a window of opportunity to attack. If you want to go back to using your other hand for an item or a shield, simply hold down the Y/Triangle button again and press the shoulder button (R1 or L1) that corresponds with the weapon's original hand.

You can two-hand your left-hand weapon by pressing the alternative attack button. That means pressing LB instead or RB, L1 instead of R1, and Right Click instead of Left Click. This will cause you to hold whatever is in your left hand with both hands.

To stop two-handing your weapon and go back to holding your weapon with one hand, you can just press the same button input again. Alternatively, press right on the D-pad or right on the arrow keys to swap your right-hand weapon (assuming you have something else equipped). Two-handing your weapon in Elden Ring will allow you to deal more damage and even activate its Ashes of War Skill. Keep this in mind as you battle bosses and look to maximise your damage output. Now once your weapons are slotted console players can Two-hand by holding the Y or triangle button on their controllers; and pressing L1/LB for using their left-handed weapon and Pressing R1/RB for using their right-handed weapon.

To two-hand or dual-wield on a PC using a keyboard and mouse, you must press and hold the E key. Now to use your left and right, hand weapons click the Left and Right click button on your mouse respectively.

Where traditional weapon setups allow you to wield a weapon and a shield on each hand, two-handing a weapon increases your damage output by giving you the opportunity to use multiple weapons of different classes and create different attacks.

Two-Handing weapons are extremely useful for the boss fights as you will increase your damage of both light and heavy attacks. You can also experiment by pairing different weapons with each other to create interesting combos.

Interestingly you can while dual wielding you can utilize the light attacks of different weapons having different weights. So by two-handing, you can equip a slower weapon like a hammer in one hand and a quicker weapon like a dagger in the other.

You must also know that a drawback of two-handing in Elden Ring is the limitation of combos and moves available. This is further reduced when you are not power stancing which can reduce your attack options.

You also need to make sure that both of your weapons are of the same level. The damage output will be the product of both weapon levels. Hence, if one weapon has a low level, the overall power of both weapons is going to decrease.

To enter the power stance in Elden Ring, you need to press the L1 button for PlayStation and the Left Bumper for Xbox, and the player will do combo moves that will involve both weapons at the same time and crisscross each other in their paths.
