You Tube: NY Congressman Engel Speaks Out Against New JFK Departure Routes
On December 9, 2011, Congressman Engel took to the House floor reiterating his opposition to the FAA’s Airspace Redesign project. We have provided the You Tube link below to his testimony. The recent realization that his Congressional District in Rockland County, NY also will be impacted by new JFK departure routes sparked the Congressman’s current statement (see below diagrams for the new and current JFK patterns). Please note that these new departure routes initially overfly Nassau County and then New York City.
Separately, the below diagrams also highlight airspace over the Atlantic Ocean that is classified as restricted, which is outlined in fuchsia in the diagrams below. This airspace is reserved for military training purposes and includes most of the airspace off of the coast of Long Island and New Jersey. This is another head scratcher. Why is this airspace off limits for commercial aviation in what the FAA calls the most congested airspace in the nation? Why did the Department of Defense refuse to ease access to it and allow the FAA to develop new commercial aircraft flight patterns over the Atlantic Ocean? Instead, the agency developed new patterns over New York City and its densely populated suburban communities.
