I'm having trouble with QuickCursor and WriteRoom, which I haven't seen directly addressed in the forums.

1/ I cannot add FoldingText to the QuickCursor edit list, using the forum note. This is trivial, as I do not need that feature; I mention it because it may bear on the other problem.

2/ With one exception, WriteRoom (3.2.1 and 2.5.2, which I still have) does not work with QC: it will copy and edit the original, but after editing fails to paste back into the source document. (I do not have the AppStore version.) The exception is TextWrangler; QC will edit and paste back into TW.

3/ TextWrangler does work exactly as advertised with QC.

My problem is that WR, not TW, is my editor of choice. What might I try to correct the problem with WR, either 2 or 3?

10.7.x shouldn't have the same sandboxing restrictions as on 10.8 as far as I'm aware.

What happens if you use a new user account (or guest mode)? If it works there, then there may be another utility running that QuickCursor doesn't play nice with. If it doesn't work even on guest mode, then try a reinstall of WriteRoom if possible.

Anything QuickCursor/WriteRoom-related in Console?

Sorry for the late response, it's been a bit hectic (and windy) here.

Thanks for the reply.

Tried with Guest User, and it seems to work as it should.

A few hours ago I filed a note at the WR group, might be a bit more specific about troubles.

Only related items I can find in Console (similar entries frequent):

10/31/12 3:26:43.379 PM com.apple.dock.extra: 2012-10-31 15:26:43.378 com.apple.dock.extra[280:1a07] Can't open input server /Users/philsheehan/Library/InputManagers/Edit in WriteRoom

10/31/12 3:26:46.567 PM Dropbox: Can't open input server /Users/philsheehan/Library/InputManagers/Edit in WriteRoom

10/31/12 3:26:45.434 PM GrowlHelperApp: Can't open input server /Users/philsheehan/Library/InputManagers/Edit in WriteRoom

10/31/12 3:27:33.540 PM Console: Can't open input server /Users/philsheehan/Library/InputManagers/Edit in WriteRoom

No QuickCursor mention in Console at all

Hmm, OK. Thanks for checking out the guest account, that's promising. Well, let's get the inputmanager thing squared away and see if that helps. If it doesn't, then what's left to do is go through what other utilities and login items your account runs and see what might be conflicting by disabling them and adding them back slowly.

The InputManagers thing is left over from the pre-OS X 10.5 when WriteRoom had a bundled input manager that did roughly what QuickCursor does on a small scale. 10.5 broke input managers, so here we are today. You just need to remove the plugin like so:

1. In Finder, go to the "Go" menu and choose "Go to Folder…".
2. Enter this address and go there: ~/Library/InputManagers
3. Drag the "Edit in WriteRoom" plugin there to the trash. Maybe reboot for safety's sake, and try QC again.

inputmanager trashed, but the problem remains. I also tried cutting everything from the log-in list (four at a time) with no improvement. Those dropped include:
quicksilver
alfred
caffeine
hardware growler
drop box
shove box
key click server
app trap
clam
font explorer
clip menu
nocturne
tiny alarm
just notes

Restarted after each batch, without success (QC continues to work with Text Wrangler, not with WriteRoom; it also does not work with Smultron, which is not important). Didn't solve the problem, but it did make me realize how much needless sstuff I have up there, so I dropped a few permanently.

Maybe significant: when I try Edit in Write Room with Scrivener or Bean, it fails with the "could not copy" message; when I try the same thing with a browser -- Firefox or Chrome -- nothing happens at all. No message, no change.

So to recap, Guest Account has everything working, your normal user account does not, and we can safely rule out those utilities you listed. Hmm.

Three more thoughts:

* This should work exactly the same as the Guest Account in theory, but what if you created another normal user account (probably Administrative to match your usual account) and tried that?

* Reading over your original post, one other thing: If the problem is that the text isn't getting pasted back (but everything else looks more or less correct during the cmd+s, cmd+q sequence… try toggling the "clipboard restore" option in QC's preferences and try that; perhaps there's a pasteboard issue under 10.7.5 I'm not aware of?

* On Alfred or QuickSilver or Clip Menu (or whatever you use for clipboard management): Multiple clipboard histories should be OK with QC, but that might be a cause for nothing getting pasted back. If you go through QC's normal routine, then press cmd+v after it fails to paste back into the original app, does that paste in the correct text or nothing/wrong text?

Sorry, I don't have a 10.7 system left to test on…

Alternate Admin account, same problem; guest account still works OK.

"clipboard restore" has no effect

Cmd-V pastes in correct text.

Also: previously, I always had a WR window open when working with QC. BUT if WR is closed, ctl-W opens WR in the dock but does not open a window --> beach ball appears which goes away only by closing WR; same thing if WR is open in dock w/o window. None of that happens if I invoke TextWrangler, which continues to function properly.

Thanks for checking that, I don't have another idea yet if nothing else is showing up in the Console. Hmm… back to the drawing board on this one, not sure why using a fresh admin account would make things *not* work… it's usually the other way around.
