i like to break it down like this:

humour brings people together over a common bond or relation in a manner that every spirit is lifted.(usually, racial jokes aside that is)
lack of a sense of humour, on in this specific case getting all righteous over an image being sacrilegious does not lift any spirits at all.

i think Jesus would be a fan of lifting spirits.
