v0.55.0-release branch - preparing for a release

Folks,

I've created a v0.55.0-release branch. Bugfixes should target this
branch before a release, as new features will only be merged to dev.

Maybe we should aim for a release in a week or so?

I'm almost certain they'll be in a feature-freeze right now; their
release is in the middle of May. I'm pulling in Brian Adams so he has
an opportunity to comment.
