I have a few hundred or thousand duplicate photos on my HD that are taking up a lot of space, and I would like to delete them. They are also making it hard to locate specific photos because they are located in multiple folders that I named for each year, starting in about 2008.
I would like to use a software to identify those duplicate files and delete them. It looks like duplicate cleaner is a free and easy tool to use. Has anyone used this software, and could you recommend it. If not, is there a better (safer) way to delete only exact duplicate photos.
It seems like they just released a newer version, I wish I would have wated a week! If you want to get the older version, like I did, you can still download that too. All I can say is, I can now search for pictures much easier and faster. I also got rid of 20% of old duplicate pictures taking up HD space, in multiple folders over the years, which is what I wanted to accomplish in the first place.

I'm concerned that it may delete photo files that I don't want it to. As I understand it from the software description the app will find duplicates based on the image rather than the file name, which makes sense to me because the majority of my photos won't have specific names that I have given them. For example, I've just done a quick search and there are around 40 photo files called 008.JPG on my system, many are duplicates but about 15 are individual pictures that I want to keep. Obviously I don't want to be left with just one 008.JPG photo after running the app.
Once marked there is a Trash Marked button you can select if desired. That creates an album by the name of Duplicate Marked Photos containing those photos that were marked as duplicates. It will be up to you to actually delete them from the library.
That being said consider using PowerPhotos nstead. It's more powerful and can do what iPhoto Library Manage could for iPhoto, i.e. merge libraries, copy albums/photos between libraries with their metadata (keywords, titles, descriptions, faces, locations). IMO it's a much more worthwhile app.

To set some background, it may help to know that I use DropBox to BACKUP, SHARE, and DISTRIBUTE my image files both to clients AND among my various computers. I have the 2 Terrabyte Plan at $99 a year.
My file organizational structure looks something like this on all my machines. Most of my work is in Windows, by the way, but I do use a Mac sometimes. I keep the same structure across multiple machines for several reasons including consistency and the ability to work the same on each machine. My folder/file structure looks like this:
Since Lightroom does not import things the way I want, you might be interested to know that I do the importing with a primitive Windows Batch file. I copy all the content into a pre-created directory and then run this in that directory to move the files to the respective sub-folders.
A. Use selective sync to synchronize specific directories (e.g. 2019-05-29) on a computer by computer basis. Be careful, if you do it wrong, you can wipe out a whole directory at once including your backup! That is, do NOT delete a local copy of a DropBox folder until after you turn OFF selective sync. Indeed, until Smart Sync, if you turned off selective sync, DropBox will delete the whole folder LOCALLY.
Trying to extricate files from those many locations sometimes means I goof and recreate the same structure multiple times. To make matters more complicated, I also record images and videos with a Mavic drone.
Not only did DPC NOT tell you what the charge was, it asked you to register (you give it your email address) before it ever mentions the price ($39.90). It does seem to have some smarts to pick photos by appearance but it lumped together three different screenshots from the phone as duplicates that were NOTHING alike. I have 850,000 files on Dropbox and I need to find and delete duplicates in an easy to use manner. The earlier "solution" of using 3rd party tools to find duplicates of files in the Windows File System is not a good approach at all. Using the Windows File System requires a (potentially lengthy process) to copy all folder down from Dropbox, and then run the Third-party tool to find duplicates, deal with the duplicates, and then resynchronize the Dropbox File System and the Windows File System.
If you're using a third-party tool against the local Dropbox folder, when the compare process runs it will attempt access the online-only files which will trigger Dropbox to download them back to the computer, defeating the purpose of Smart Sync.
There really isn't a viable way to run deduplication locally against files that are only stored within Dropbox. You'll need to find a third-party tool that uses the Dropbox API to access your files directly. Do a Google search for "cloud duplicate finder" and you'll find some options that may work. Just know that third-party apps are not supported by Dropbox. If you have any issues, you'll need to contact the developer.
Dropbox Smart Sync allows you to sync just the folder and file structure to my desktop without the actual file content. The sync should be done fairly quickly. Afterwards, you may make use of 3rd party tool to help you perform the deduplication process. Though the effectiveness really depends on how the 3rd party tool performs.
