A drum machine is an electronic musical instrument that can imitate drum kits and percussion instruments. Some can also produce artificial sound effects. Most drum machines allow users to create their own beats.

This is the oldest drum beat on our list! This legendary floor tom groove was first played by Gene Krupa in 1937 with bandleader Benny Goodman. Walt Whitman, the most famous American poet of the 19th Century, published "Beat! Beat! Drums!" in 1861, shortly after the first major battle of the Civil War. The poem directly addresses the instruments of a military band, telling drums and bugle horns to raise the alarm of war. These instruments, the speaker says, should tear through society like a "ruthless force," making it impossible for everyday life to continue like normal in the midst of the fighting. In this sense, the poem is a call to arms and a rallying cry. But because the speaker acknowledges the devastating toll that violent conflict takes on society, the poem also highlights the deeply disruptive nature of war, ultimately demonstrating that everything grinds to a halt in the face of such catastrophic violence.
For example, a quarter note in a 4/4 time signature represents one beat, meaning you strike the drum once per beat. And a whole note in a 4/4 time signature represents four beats, meaning you strike the drum once every four beats.
Some of the most common drum beats are whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, and thirty-second notes. There are different types of triplets that can be played as well, where you play three notes in the space normally occupied by two notes.
An example of an accent is when the drummer opens the hi-hat during a drum beat and strikes it, and then presses back down on the foot pedal to close it, creating an open-and-closed-sounding rhythm. The accent symbol is usually located directly above the note being accented.
Ghost notes are often played as light, bouncy notes on a snare drum that can sound like many quick notes played in succession. This technique is often used in drum beats to help create more rhythmic movements within a piece of music, and can be played with both the right and left hands.
When learning a new song on drums, divide its sections into unique groups and work on them one at a time. Then connect them together. This trick will help you memorize the parts of the song more quickly.
New drummers need to develop coordination between their limbs. Learning drums is just as much of a mental challenge as it is a physical challenge. There are several people who recorded these rhythms and also sell educational materials teaching them, but I am not sure if they could possibly have rights over the actual rhythms or just the records/educational materials.

Hi Kurt. What if you download an mp3 of a pre-recorded drumbeat by a professional drummer (many are available online) and use that actual recording as the drum track in an original song you write, record and release.
I am trying to do some research about the copywrite of drum patterns and beats. I noticed that the most common answer to using drum beats from other songs are not copyright protected, only the sound recording.
This is a little confusing.
The backbeat is the foundation of most modern drum grooves, and is often the first beat that most drummers learn. This simple but effective rhythm places the emphasis on beats 2 and 4 via the snare drum, while the kick drum only plays on beats 1 and 3.
This is one of the most common beats in popular music today, so be sure to practice it until you can play it effortlessly.
This beat is similar to the previous one, but utilizing sixteenth notes instead of eighth notes on the hi-hat. The most common way of playing this is to alternate between your right and left hands for the hi-hat notes (RLRL). You can also try playing the hi-hat with just your right (or dominant) hand to build your speed.
Another modified backbeat, this essential drum beat places an additional kick drum on the 2 and 4 along with the snare. Layer this beat with flourishes on the hi-hat or cymbals for additional texture.
This beat is very useful when you have a song that needs space for the other instruments to shine (e.g. during a guitar solo), or to mark a section change without altering the bpm (during a bridge for example). Practice playing a simple backbeat in half time first, and then move on to more complicated rhythms.
