Queen Street Yoga Newsletter

Dear Queen Street Yogi,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. The end of February can feel rough sometimes for me, like I am just holding my breath, waiting for some warmth. I have to remind myself to BREATHE! Here is all the upcoming news about the studio, and a little note about the Yoga teachers I had the sincere pleasure of working with in Cuba.

I also want to share that I was really honoured to be included in the Record's 40 under 40 this year. It was in the paper on February 24, and hopefully will be online soon. I feel really lucky to get to do the work I do with all of you, so to be given such an honour on top of that is like icing on a really sweet cake!

Our Community Yoga Classes on Thursday nights with Leena will be continuing to connect to our wider community, by donating all the proceeds of this class to organizations in our community. For the months of March and April, all donations will be sent to Pathways to Education. To learn more about them check out http://www.pathwayscanada.ca/comm-kitchener.html

Lindsay and myself are also really excited to begin working with this program, teaching yoga to the teens who are being supported by Pathways. Look to the April Newsletter for news on how this will develop!

5) Home Practice Workshop with Meaghan
Friday March 5th, 6-9pm. Cost: $35

If you are trying to practice at home, but find that there are many obstacles in the way of getting onto your mat, then this is the workshop for you. This workshop will be helpful for both beginners and seasoned practitioners. Whether you have never practiced at home, already do but want to do so more, or used to but have been away from your mat for a while, I hope to inspire, motivate and support you on your journey of home practice.

Why have a home practice? To me, home practice is the meat of yoga. Class is where I come for community, inspiration and challenge. My daily home practice is where I get to come home to myself, learn and open to who and how I am, as well as do the poses that are specifically how I want to open my body. Home practice at first for me was a great struggle. Now it is a total joy some days, and basic maintenance on others, but always with me.

6) Healthy Living Day at The Children's Museum
Join us March 7th at The Museum, right around the corner from the Studio! We will be offering Kids Yoga and Yoga for Office, as well as there is a whole day of Healthy Living workshops. You might also want to check out the Body Exhibit.

8) A note from Meaghan
Last week I was really lucky to get to escape the Canadian winter for a week with my sweetie and visit the wonderful land that is Cuba. You may remember that Anna-Marie has made a wonderful connection with a group of yoga teachers in Cuba, and she set up an opportunity for me to meet them during my visit. I have to say, that the day I spent teaching and hanging out with this group of wonderful people was one of the great highlights of the trip!

We had our class in the choir loft of an old stone church with beautiful archways, natural light, warm air, and... a blaring sound system outside that serenaded us with rock ballads as we sweated our way through working on chaturanga. (This was only for an hour but the love of loud music is an endearing and at times irritating Cuban trait!)

We spent the morning looking at the workings of the femur in standing poses and spent the afternoon discussing questions and ideas. The teachers in Cuba do so as volunteers in their workplaces or hospitals because Yoga teaching is not a recognized profession there. I was really excited to hear, however, that one of the teachers has made yoga an integral part of the therapy provided for mental health patients in Cuba! An amazing achievement that I would be overjoyed to see happen here in Canada!

Our day together ended with chanting. Together we sang Om Mani Padme Hung, and the Invocation to Tara. And I must say, to sing with this group of such sincere teachers, in the choir loft of a Catholic church, with the warm moist cuban air on my skin did a lot to melt my winter blues away. I hope to return soon!

Nameste,
Meaghan
