For 100 less the MYOB Accounting version probably meets the needs of most small businesses. Both editions include stock control and integrated payroll. However, MYOB's biggest attraction over the years has been that it is the leading mainstream SME accounting system available for Apple Macs. An MYOB Accounting Plus for Windows company file can be opened across platforms in MYOB Accounting Plus for Macintosh and vice versa, a facility we use regularly in our office as we support Mac users on MYOB, but only run the program under Windows in the office.

Main features
Accounts in MYOB are highly customisable, allowing you to track categories for fund or division accounting and track four levels of account detail. The ability to create and track accounts for jobs and sub-jobs has always been a strength of MYOB and this feature remains easy to set up, use and report on in Version 16.

The sales ledger in Accounting Plus copes well with the complexities of billing on the basis of time spent, and can combine time and materials on a single invoice. As with all the current accounting packages, you can design professional sales invoices for printing on plain paper by adding boxes, shading, background graphics, logos and so on.

There is basic CRM functionality in the contact management module and customer records. Missing from other basic accounting packages, but nicely incorporated here is the facility to change quotes and orders to invoices and switch back and forth, a very basic requirement that Sage has failed to introduce in its Instant Accounts software. MYOB will also track the source of your sales.

Both MYOB and QuickBooks have effective period close down and locking routines to make sure VAT transactions can't be lost in prior periods, but my experience is that clients often ignore or bypass them. I seldom see the same problem with Sage users. This seems to be a consequence of moving from the old period-based accounting to the modern date-driven approach in these package, which may well be more user-friendly but has its own risks.

MYOB Accounting Plus is an Australian accounting system. It will allow you to do all the accountings in an enterprise. You will be able to build your Accounting Plan, defining the name of the accounts you will be using, its type, tax charge and initial balance. You can register your bank account's transactions, reconcile accounts and even print cheques. The sales module will allow you to register your sales, print out or email invoices and register your transactions in a Journal. The time billing module will let you invoice works that are paid according to the time employed. "Purchases" will give you control about the goods your company buys, "Payroll" will perform every calculation about the payments to your employees, while it will process the payroll, print out the cheques and payment summaries, along with the timesheets. The "Inventory" module will allow you to know exactly which is your stock, set prices and produce reports. "Card File" will allow you to keep a record of your contacts (customers, providers or else) and to print out mailing labels and personalized letters.

There are much better accounting programs available now, but unfortunately people still want to use MYOB, try give your users alternatives like that dont ever have these issues and will save both you and your user time.

MYOB already had a very solid reporting function, so this version's new report-access layout doesn't add much. But reports are critical to an accounting program's value, and the ability to customize both data selection and layout, combined with the sheer variety of boilerplate reports, represent key elements of MYOB's success. Distribution options are quite generous and include Excel export, e-mail, and HTML.

Top-notch forms
You could say the same of MYOB's record formats and transaction forms. These building blocks of daily accounting activity leave little room for improvement. Besides incorporating plenty of prefab and custom fields, you get quick access to related data and processes. Sales invoices, for example, contain links to related journals, layout and design, and registers. You can quickly dispatch transaction forms via e-mail and fax. And MYOB, unlike its competitors, supports multiple currencies.

Nothing much new
But the latest release is surprisingly slim on new features, especially in terms of Web integration. Nonetheless, it's as powerful as Peachtree Complete, and it surpasses QuickBooks for features and overall interface design. And MYOB simply feels more solid than its competitors. Despite its dearth of Web-connectivity tools, MYOB is the best choice for both service- and product-based small businesses that still prefer desktop accounting over more difficult Web-based accounting.

MYOB Accounting is developed by MYOB Technology Pty Ltd and is used by 111 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 18.3, 19.0, 20.0, 21.0 and 24.2. The names of program executable files are myob.exe, BASlink.exe, FormsUpgrader.exe, TemplatesUpgrader.exe and MYOB_SG_Accounting_V18_Test_Drive (2).exe. The product will soon be reviewed by our informers.

I have the same consideration, moving from MYOB Plus v.8. It is my conclusion presently (FYI) to cut-over at end of accounting period, migrating only account definitions and starting balances, leaving transactional data behind.

I am planning on migrating from MYOB accounting plus v13 for mac (around 2004 !) - and know of nothing to help with the import process, apart from good old excel of course. Doing the transfer at the end of the accounting period is a very sensible thing to do.

It is standard ERP practice to cut-over at end of accounting period and only migrate what is necessary moving forward. Migrating historic data is usually a huge headache and often leeds to troubles. I'd go with Jeff suggestion.
