"Birthday" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 double album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, mainly by McCartney, it is the opening track on the third side of the LP (or the second disc in CD versions of the record). Surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr performed it for Starr's 70th birthday at Radio City Music Hall on 7 July 2010.[3]

George Martin was away so his assistant Chris Thomas produced the session. His memory is that the song was mostly McCartney's: "Paul was the first one in, and he was playing the 'Birthday' riff. Eventually the others arrived, by which time Paul had literally written the song, right there in the studio." Everyone in the studio sang in the chorus and it was 5 am by the time the final mono mix was completed.[6]

Lennon said in his Playboy interview in 1980: "'Birthday' was written in the studio. Just made up on the spot. I think Paul wanted to write a song like 'Happy Birthday Baby', the old fifties hit. But it was sort of made up in the studio. It was a piece of garbage."[7]

"Birthday" begins with an intro drum fill, then moves directly into a blues progression in A (in the form of a guitar riff doubled by the bass) with McCartney singing at the top of his chest voice with Lennon on a lower harmony. After this section, a drum break lasting eight measures brings the song into the middle section, which rests entirely on the dominant. A repeat of the blues progression/guitar riff instrumental section, augmented by piano brings the song into a bridge before returning to a repeat of the first vocal section, this time with the piano accompaniment.

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of its release, Jacob Stolworthy of The Independent listed "Birthday" at number 17 in his ranking of the White Album's 30 tracks. He wrote of the song: "The opening to the second-half [of the album] treads familiar Beatles ground with an improvised riff that could be the record's biggest earworm. Hilariously, Lennon would go on to call [the song] 'garbage'."[8]

According to the book accompanying the 2018 box set The Beatles: Super Deluxe Version, the annotation on the tape box from the session offers an alternative line-up that "explodes some myths of who played what":[9]

Paul McCartney released a live version on 8 October 1990 in the UK, with a US release albeit only as a cassette on 16 October.[10] Originally appearing on Tripping the Live Fantastic, the single reached number 29 on the UK Singles Chart[11] and number 3 in Italy.[12] The B-side was a live version of "Good Day Sunshine". McCartney also released a 12" single and CD single with those songs and two more live tracks, "P.S. Love Me Do" and "Let 'Em In". "P.S. Love Me Do" is a combination of "P.S. I Love You" and "Love Me Do".

Underground Sunshine recorded the song as a single in 1969. Their version was a minor hit in the US, reaching number 19 on the Cash Box chart, number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100,[18][19] and number 35 in Canada.[20]

Paul Weller covered the song for McCartney's 70th birthday. This version was available for download on 18 June 2012 for one day only.[21] Even with this limited mode of distribution, the track reached number 64 on the UK Singles Chart.

Throwing a first birthday party is usually a festive affair, filled with balloons and cake and presents. When our first son turned one we centered the whole party around his favorite stuffed animal, a Paul Frank Monkey. We knew we wanted to do something different for our second son's first birthday party, something that even adults would enjoy. We thought about all of our family's favorite things, one of them is music, specifically classic rock. Our family loves the Beatles. Both of our sons had Beatles songs that we sang them in utero and we even filled their nurseries with lullaby renditions of The Beatles while they slept. It seemed natural to pick The Beatles as a theme for our little boys first birthday party.

The girl who is quite possibly the world's biggest Beatles fan just celebrated her eleventh birthday in a very Fab Four sort of way. This party has been a long time in the making. About six months ago, the idea of a Beatles birthday party popped into my head, and Hannah's reaction to my idea was a big smile, big eyes, and a big YES! Since then, she and I have been churning out ideas and writing them down on our master "BEATLES PARTY IDEAS" list. The goal was to make it fun and Beatles-ish without breaking the bank, and I think it was a success!

First, I incorporated as many Beatles songs as I could into the invitation, and printed them out myself. Brightly colored decorations were inspired by the Sgt. Pepper album, and I cut black cardstock records to hang from the ceiling, complete with the Apple Records label. We put up Hannah's Beatles posters, pulled out her postcards and vinyl albums, and printed and framed lesser known Beatles photos we found online. Hannah has the framed photos on her dresser now, so she can swoon over them whenever she pleases.

I made the big menu poster so the girls would see the connection between the Beatles songs and the food. Everything was relatively simple...just pizza and soda, chocolate dipped strawberries, a bowl of green apples to represent the Apple record label, Fudge Stripe cookies turned on their backs to resemble vinyl records, and Twinkie* yellow submarines decorated with Skittles and straws, and Swedish fish swimming about on the platter. The trickiest part was decorating these cupcakes with the Beatles' faces, but they turned out okay...? And of course we were blasting Beatles music all through dinner!

On to the activities! Hannah and I came up with a Beatles playlist and corresponding prizes for a game of "Name That Tune." We gave the girls a split second to hear each song and whoever named it first won the prize (although after two prizes they had to let the others have a go at winning). I was amazed at how quickly some of the girls named the songs...Hannah has trained her friends well! Here is our playlist and what we did for little prizes:

We had a few extra prizes left, so the girls played Hot Potato with Beatles music until all the prizes were gone. Other activities we considered doing was making cardboard guitars like these, or painting yellow submarines, however, we just didn't have time. Instead, the girls drummed, strummed and sang their little hearts out to Beatles Rock Band, and finished off the night by watching one of the funniest movies ever made, HELP. If you have never seen it, I HIGHLY recommend it.

For the party favors, I printed paper sacks with an image from HELP, and filled them with Beatles buttons, stickers, Penny Lane penny rolls (see below for free printable!), and "RINGo" Pops. Some other possible prizes and/or party favors would be these adorable music boxes. They really do make a great little gift for any Beatles fan.My girls are working on collecting all of the Beatles songs available. You could also do Beatles posters, magnets, or tote bags (all very inexpensive on Amazon.com). The list is endless, and it really just depends on your party budget. Another fun shopping site is fabfourstore.com.

For you! pennylanelabel (simply cut and tape around penny rolls) and beatlesjournalcover*Beatles pictogram can be found here.*Although Hostess Twinkies are no longer available, most grocery stores offer similar store brand versions.

As I have mentioned before my daughter is an old soul who likes mid-century modern and everything vintage. I always keep my eye out for things when I am cruising thrift stores. I found some great old napkins, tablecloth, and a book of party games for mere pennies. The polka dotted plates came from Target and the candy from the Dollar Store.

Grandma Jingles sent the paper drink coasters, I found the candles here when purchasing straws on Etsy and the party favors were simple paper die cuts topped with a mini cupcake liner filled with red hots.

Your festive table is so pretty. The bright colours are so fun and happy. Happy belated birthday to your Princess Fashionista and Happy 90th Birthday to Grandma Jingles. Anyone with Jingles for a name has to be fun loving and happy!

"Birthday" is a song written by Lennon-McCartney and performed by the Beatles on their double album The Beatles (commonly known as The White Album). It is the opening track on the third side of the LP (or the second disc in CD versions of the record). The song is an example of the Beatles' return to more traditional rock and roll form, although their music had increased in complexity and it had developed more of its own characteristic style by this point. McCartney and Ringo Starr performed it for Starr's 70th birthday on 7 July 2010.

This is how good the Beatles were: They took the words "You say it's your birthday. It's my birthday, too." and turned it into one of the most famous classic rock songs in history!! If any other band ever tried that, they'd be looking for a new record company...

My friends played this to me when I turned 18 a couple of months ago. I will never forget it.I'm having trouble discribing how much I like this song. I've sitten here at the keyboard for about ten minutes and the song is on it's fourth repeat. But I can't put my affection in words. It's a strange song, I mean. It's something about it that just makes me smile. I always get very happy when I listen to it.

I made this Beatles birthday cake for my sons 21st birthday. It was the 1st stacked cake I've ever made (I'm a newbie, just finished Wilton @) so it was a challenge for me! It is iced in buttercream with fondant accents. The Beatle decorations are made out of colorflow. Cracked the sub when I was putting it on, forgot to dowel it and had to take off a layer and then fix it, and a million other "headaches"! It about drove me crazy but once I finished I was pretty pleased.
