Ihave several Server 2019 Essentials servers that are licensed with a VLSC Key. I am trying to upgrade to Standard edition with valid VLSC keys for this product, by using DISM command. I am getting the following error on all the servers:
DISM.exe /Online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEULA
Error: 1168, The specified product key could not be validated.
Check that the specified product key is valid and that it matches the target edition.
Hi,
According to the User Guide of transition from windows server essential to standard (2012), it reminded users to fully back up the server data since without a full backup of the server, you cannot restore the server to the state that it was in prior to the transition. Regardless of the roles have been installed in the server, it is necessary to backup the important data or even the use profiles or redirected folders.
You could Always try activating using KMS Key accepting the EULA then following these instructions below: courtesy of Damitha Anuradha Error 1168 - The specified product key could not be validated. - Welcome to

Once the above command is successfully executed you will prompt for restart the server. Restart the server and execute the below command to install the new MAK key which is available on Volume Licensing Service Center.
Microsoft invites everyone to explore the features of the Windows Server platform with the StandardEvaluation or DatacenterEvaluation trial editions. You can download an ISO or VHD image with the free version of Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016, or 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Evaluation Center website by completing a short form ( -us/evalcenter). This edition of Windows Server is for evaluation, testing, or training purposes only and is not for commercial use. Once you install Windows Server Evaluation, you have 180 days to test its capabilities. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle []).push();
Suppose you are running production tasks on the Windows Server Evaluation. In that case, there is a way to convert it to a full Windows Server edition, while keeping your data and without reinstalling the operating system.
If you are using the Evaluation version of Windows Server, the current edition and the time remaining before the grace period expires are displayed on the desktop (Windows License valid for 180 days).
To convert an evaluation Windows Server into a full version, you will need to use the public KMS client setup key (or Generic Volume License Key, GVLK) for your version of Windows Server. For a complete list of GVLK keys for all versions of Windows, visit the Microsoft website Key Management Services (KMS) client activation and product keys. The complete list of keys for all of the supported versions of Windows Server can be found in the table below: (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle []).push();
In this case, we are going to upgrade the Eval edition to the full retail version of Windows Server 2022 Standard. Find and copy the GVLK key for the target version and edition of Windows Server from the table, and then run the following command:
Some users complain that DISM /set-edition command sometimes gets stuck at 10%. If the command hangs for more than 20 minutes, we recommend that you stop the Software Protection Service (Stop-Service sppsvc -Force) and restrict access to the Internet on the host (you can simply unplug the Ethernet LAN cable).
Indicates that you have specified your MAK or Retail key instead of the public GVLK key in the DISM command. Always use the Microsoft GVLK key when upgrading to Windows Server edition. You can later replace the public KMS key with your product key.
The current edition cannot be upgraded to any target editionsIt means you are trying to upgrade from Datacenter Edition to Standard. This upgrade path is not supported; There is an unofficial way to downgrade Windows Server edition from Datacenter to Standard.Error: 50. Setting an Edition is not supported with online imagesThis most likely indicates that the server has the Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DS) role deployed. Converting Windows Server Edition on domain controllers is not supported;This Windows image cannot upgrade to the edition of Windows that was specified. The upgrade cannot proceed. Run the /Get-TargetEditions option to see what edition of Windows you can upgrade toThe error appears when you try to convert Windows Server Evaluation Datacenter to Standard. You cannot upgrade Eval Datacenter to Standard. You must convert the ServerDatacenterEval edition to ServerDatacenter. Specify the public KMS key for the Windows Server Datacenter edition in the DISM command.With the DISM command, you can also upgrade your Windows 10 edition without reinstalling it.
Thank you very much, this saved a lot of work after a project was fully implemented over an evaluation version by a contractee and I got the job to activate it; somehow, this time, the Microsoft phone support was not able to find anyone who knew this solution, at least in time, and your article worked quite well.
I installed the 2016 datacenter core eval version (14393.0.161119-1705). After we bought the retail keys its not possible to convert to the full version and I have to reinstall everything (Server Cluster with Storage Spaces Direct). Lost three days work only because MS has WRONG informations on their site.
Same panick here at first. ToDo -> Convert Eval to Full on a Domain Controller. That is not supported! From elevated cmd prompt the installation of productkey was less then one hour. Hangs a bit at 10%. At first reboot of Domain Controller, the DC was incorrectly connected to private network instead of domain network. After gpupdate and a few (2x) restarts everything seems fine again. Sidenote: I did however had to reactivate Windows also through the GUI. Checked Winver.exe and seems fine.
Thanks for this topic. I successfully applied this guide to an AD DS on Windows server 2019 without having the necessity to uninstall the role and demote the DC.
No differences between a server with AD or not. It was a great joy for me !
There is already a bug report filed, to prevent the error for these integrations in the UI: Yaml only integrations in submenus error with Config flow could not be loaded: "message":"Invalid handler specified" Issue #14376 home-assistant/frontend GitHub
in my experience, invalid handler happens when the folder name does not match the DOMAIN name.
Maybe some refactor has caused this discrepency? obscure error indeed, but this is one thing worth checking.
This specifically occurs when the SCHANNEL security settings within the registry have been changed from the default. To ensure maximum compatibility, install Veeam Backup & Replication 11a or newer.
Customers have reported to Veeam Support that they were able to resolve this specific error message using a third-party tool named "IIS Crypto" to set "Best Practices" schannel security settings.
In this case, the specified file is the client.pfx file, which the system cannot open because it does not exist. The client.pfx file was not created due to the OpenSSL shown just prior to the attempt to import the certificate.
tar ("tape archive") is a Unix application that creates (and extracts) archives in the ".tar" format. It is typically used through the text-based terminal, using cryptic single-letter arguments such as "tar -cvf archive.tar *". Many Unix executables are distributed via tar archives; as a result tar files would be encountered by Unix users as commonly as Windows users encounter EXE files. Depending on the flavor of Unix, the order of the flags, or the exclusion of the hyphen, could render the command incorrect, which would either throw up an error or worse, cause one to accidentally overwrite or delete important files.
The comic alludes to the fact that, despite years of use of the command, it is incredibly hard to remember what the letters stand for without looking them up, such as with Google. The joke here is that a "tar" command with perfect syntax on the first try without outside help is such a daunting task that even Rob can't overcome it with confidence, and apologizes for not being able to prevent their imminent death.
The title text points out that while much of computing changes very quickly, the tar program, which is very old (originating ca. 1975), is still around and heavily used. Randall points out the paradox that after 15 years he is still unable to write out a proper tar command from memory, yet at the same time he feels that he shouldn't have to and a newer, better tool really should have come along already.
There is probably also a pun on "tarbomb," a poorly created tar archive that, when extracted, dumps a load of files into the current directory that the user has to clean up. And although the bomb looks more like Fat Man, the type of bomb that was used over Nagasaki, at least size-wise, it may also be a pun on the name of the largest ever hydrogen bomb which was called the Tsar Bomba (translation: "emperor bomb").
Even if his life depended on it and after years of usage, Bob/Randall could not come up with the right parameters without looking them up. So a situation is shown, where Bob's life depends on coming up with the right parameters:
I think another joke is in the fact that you don't know which Unix is running on the bomb so you don't actually know which parameter layout is supported. tar --help for example may or may not be valid since -- is a GNU extension.
Googling tar commands would definitely take more than 10 seconds, especially considering that Rob did not take his computer. (A smartphone is an option, but...) Then again, why would "ten" be written in letters instead of numerals? Greyson (talk) 13:28, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm a Windows user, so bear with me. Couldn't he type something like "man tar" to get the proper usage of the "tar" command on this particular system? It's a "man" command, so it shouldn't count as a try towards typing a "tar" command. Of course, maybe the bomb would explode if he entered anything else. 70.31.159.230 13:46, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
