Hi Tim,

I was checking out http://www.qubit-toolkit.org/wiki/index.php?title=Multi-institution_portal#Browse, and noticed you had posted this enhancement suggestion:

"Another useful enhancement would be to allow the institution (or administrator) to adjust the URL, i.e. edit the slug for the institution object. E.g., currently we have: http://www.memorybc.ca/simon-fraser-university-archives-and-records-management-department;isdiah although the ;isdiah can be omitted. In this example, something like http://www.memorybc.ca/sfu might be preferable"

I think this makes a lot of sense, and would like to see this in ICA-AtoM Release 1.2 if possible.  Have you given any thought to how the UI would work?  My main concern is that this should be an admin-only feature, and my initial feeling is not to stick it into the ISDIAH template, because it's not part of the institutional data.  Specifically, I think we need a mock-up of what this interface would look like, are you willing to take that on?

Updating the permalink slug itself is not technically challenging (though we do need to enforce uniqueness) so if we can nail down the UI I'm hopeful that the enhancement won't be that much work.

P.S. I couldn't find an existing issue for this enhancement, have you filed one that I'm missing?

Cheers,

Me too!

I personally like how Wordpress solved it: http://busyblogging.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/permalink-wordpress.jpg (the shot is not very good, I found it in Google)

Hi David,

Thanks for catching this suggestion - I've just filed issue 1960.

I've expanded the issue (though it could certainly be narrowed again) to suggest allowing this feature for any permalink, since it might be useful in other scenarios, and I assume the logic is the same.

Can the admin menus be context-dependent? Taking Jesús' suggestion, it would probably be easier to have an edit link from the relevant page. If this can't be done via the menus, there could be a link somewhere on the page.

I agree that it should be an admin-only feature

Tim

Like Jesus I also like the Wordpress UI implementation of this.

One option is to have it appear above the edit menu (for all entities with a
permalink) but only as a Symfony template block (e.g. partial) if ACL
permissions = true, typically admin only but customizable via ACL functionality.
