Hello guys. New to linux but pretty tech savey and obviously new to Qubes.

I'm trying to create a Kali VM- I dont wont to boot from a USB , I actually want Kali installed on my SDD in Qubes. I'm running 4.0.1

To test my image, I have loaded an ISO on a USB and booted from bios to it and get the main kali screen with with the install option, i just need to do this from within a VM now. The iso i downloaded was the third one form this list

https://www.kali.org/downloads/ - Named Kali Linux 64 Bit

I have tried a couple of ways now to load this image in a Kali Vm, but don't seem to be getting it right. I have spent hours now and really frustrated with myself.

First way i tried was to create a new HVM following the instructions here on
youtube here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40CJIel3rMY - this guy is running 3.2 but i as i understand it this exercise is this same for 4.0.1

I manged to create a Kali--HVM. I copied my ISO to the personal VM in the following path /Home/Kali/Kali.iso

then the problem comes; I tried to start the HVM and then mount the path as the CDROM - I get the following error (i have checked that all the case sensative letters are correct)

[User1@dom0 ~]$ qvm-start Kali--HVM --cdrom=personal:/Home/Kali/kali.iso
Failed to setup loop device for /Home/Kali/kali.iso

The Kali--HVM does start.

I found a post here form a google search relating to that message- https://askubuntu.com/questions/634501/cant-mount-iso-file-as-loop-device-error-failed-to-setup-loop-device

I ran the lsmod | grep loop and got the message Loop 32768 2 , so I think I have a loop module installed, but i don't really understand what this means.

I'm was now just blindly follwing the post and tried the mount -o loop -t iso9660 /Home/Kali/kali.iso /media/cdrom - but i did not get any change when i tried to run the start Kali--HVM command. So this is where i got to with the first way I tried to install Kali.

On the other attempted way I followed these instructions here https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/pentesting/kali/ - to create a debian clone and katoolin.

I updated the Debian template ok and ran the katoolin script and did not have any Qubes* errors. I then ran the apt-upgrade for Kali and this was ok. I then got a blue splash screen telling me that variuos services would need to be stopped and restarted as part of the installation and that I could press Yes for that to happen automatically.

I typed yes and it started to download more code. It then stopped a service i guess and the VM Hlated this stopped. At this point I cant start any application. i tired xterm, terminal and nothing works. I tried to run a gnome terminal start commend from dom0 and still nothing. This is where i got to wit this type of install. I tired it twice and the same thing occurred both times.

So i cant get a Kali Vm working yet and really could do with some help, please dont assume i know commands or basic interim steps, i will need it explained ot me what i'm actually doing in any commend. My thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi,

I am using a Kali VM ( debian clone & katoolin )
retry, and be carefull about that https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/removing-templatevm-packages/#removing-only-packages-not-needed-for-a-qubes-templatevm
( maybe some required qubes package got removed after some update / autoremove / ..., and if it is the case, you won't be able to launch any apps)
