Was it working with R2?

I had a same problem with r2, then Hakisho Nukama suggested:

"Is linux-firmware installed in your TemplateVM, which is used for your netvm?

Start a terminal in your TemplateVM (i.e. fedora-20-x64)
# qvm-run -a fedora-20-x64 gnome-terminal

In your TemplateVM install linux-firmware
# sudo yum install linux-firmware

Best Regards,
Hakisho Nukama "

I tried this again, but it doesn't work. When I install linux-firmware whit this command:"sudo yum install linux-firmware " in the template vm which is used for my netvm. The driver is installed correctly but the network manager indicate that the device is not managed.

Which wifi chip do you have? I think in this vintage of Thinkpads there was:

Thinkpad 1x1 b/g/n

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2200 (2x2 BGN)

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 AGN

(Other models also had a Centrino 6300 Ultimate option.)

You can find yours by running 'lspci' in dom0.

You have the Thinkpad 1x1 chip (RTL8188CE)...

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_11b/g/n_Wireless_LAN_Mini-PCI_Express_Adapter_II

The Thinkwiki page seems to recommend not using this wifi chip with
Linux, though that page may be a bit old. (IIRC this was the cheapest
wifi option for the Ivy Bridge Thinkpads.) However, they prefer the
'rtlwifi' driver over the OEM driver.

You can check which drivers are in use with 'sudo lsmod' in the netvm.
You could also use 'rmmod' to unload the driver, then 'modprobe' to
reload it... and then look at the end of 'dmesg' to see system messages
relating to that driver.

It seems strange because I have 2 different Lenovo x230, one with i5 bought a year earlier and the other with i7 bought a year after. But even the i7 was bought around 2 years ago. Well none had any of the problems you describe with R2 (never tried R3). They both worked out of the box.

So why yours did not work? I do not know, but if yours is younger than 2 years old it may be Lenovo changed some  specification and made it less linux compatible. It would be interesting to know for the HCL. Otherwise yours may have some manufacturing problem.

i cannot help but hope you'll find another work-around.

I have a cheaper thinpad 1x1 bgn :(

Or

Find a screwdriver and replace some screw from your laptop in order to replace the palmrest... after u replace it u will see a small wifi chip with two antena cables... probably a gray and black another two are the 3g modem... you can read the label and define which one u have...

3 years old x230 with i5 has centrino wireless-N 2200 (revc4)
2 years old x230 with i7 has centrino advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)

Confirm that both never had this problem with R2
