How to set the screensaver to either show keyboard language or not to lock screen as default ?

I have tried to set it to not lock the screen by uncheck it in the Screensaver settings. But it still continues to lock the screen.

Every time the screensaver lock the screen, I need to reset/restart the pc as I can’t know which keyboard layout is used and that is just a little bit annoying ! 😕

So I hope someone can explain to me how I can get it to show the keyboard layout or not locking the screen.

If that isn’t possible, can I then somehow disable or uninstall the screensaver ?

Ah, you are right about the "lock after" option.

I've just checked my system, and in the screensaver preferences window,
the Mode can be set to Disable Screen Saver. I think that is what you
need to do.

Yes, that’s right.

I forgot to write that I also have tried that, and that didn’t work either.

In screensaver preferences, set "Lock screen after" to 0 minutes.

You’re right, I forgot once again that Linux/Qubes OS consist of small programs that is made by different other creators.

Setting “lock screen after” 0 minutes just makes the screensaver to lock immediately when the screensaver gets activated.

I have wrote to the creator of the screensaver, and he says X11 sucks and makes it impossible to get the keyboard layout showed.

So I have to disable the lock.

One option is to set the lockTimeout to a large number so that it won’t lock. lockTimeout control have long after a blank screen the lock will be activated.

Another solution is to disable or uninstall the program.

It didn’t help to set “lock screen after” to 720. It still locks immediately when the screen blanks.

I wonder if I actually have changed the settings of the screensaver that Qubes uses at dom0, or just a unused one in the app menu similar to the network manager in the same menu.

If it isn’t possible to change the settings of the screensaver that Qubes OS is actually using, then I would like to hear how I can either disable or delete it in Qubes ?

A E:
If you're changing the settings in Qubes menu/System Tools/Screensaver,
once you uncheck "lock after" go to File/Restart Daemon. Otherwise, your
changes don't take effect until a reboot.

I’ll try that.

But I have tried to change the “blank after” and “lock after” to 720 minutes and restart the pc afterwards. And there still seems to go just about 10 minutes before the screen goes blank and lock. And I have checked that the settings of the screensaver still say 720 after the restart, and it does. But it doesn’t seem to make any difference...

The setting to disable screensaver does work for KDE in dom0. Switching
to KDE has fixed a number of GUI problems for me.

Okay, how do I switch to KDE ?

And what are the cons with switching to KDE... ?

I shall probably mention that I’m a Linux and Qubes newbie.

This guide only requires a few steps in the dom0 terminal:

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/kde/

Make sure you also do the lightdm->sddm changes because lightdm is where
some of the problems originate.

The downsides to KDE are that it uses about 200MB more RAM (IMO, very
much worth it) and the Network Manager applet icon appears blank (its
still easy to use once you know its there in the systray).

Okay, I have seen here (link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fo45bo1jvZI ) that new versions of KDE uses less ram than XFCE.

Which version of KDE do you use in Qubes OS ?

I have tried to install KDE in dom0 by using this command:

sudo qubes-dom0-update @kde-desktop-qubes
Then the terminal returned an error on the first line: As far as I remember (I can only see the last 1.000 lines in the terminal), it returned something like it couldn’t find or edit a specific xml file.

And then the installation process continued and got completed. I then restarted the pc, and the only change I can see, is that there appear some more program icons under Qubes menu -> System Tools.

For example “KDE System Settings”.

So as the desktop environment seems to look almost as before, I guess the installation haven’t run properly, or am I wrong... ?

But in either case, I would like to know what I should do now.

Log out.
At login screen, find the chooser that allows you to select KDE.
Select KDE

Yes, that doc page should also mention something about choosing KDE or
removing XFCE. Now I remember I setup /etc/sddm.conf with the following
which takes me directly to KDE:

[Autologin]
User=user
Session=plasma.desktop

if you're interested in that version of KDE, you'll need to run the Qubes 4.1 beta, as Qubes 4.0's fedora 25 won't receive that update. :)
(And you'll need to install the packages manually, as the meta package @kde-desktop-qubes doesn't work (yet).)
you'll probably need at least:
plasma-breeze plasma-workspace kdelibs kde-settings-plasma sddm dolphin kwin kscreen

My guess is that it's easier to "show the password" rather than display the
keyboard layout.
For me (having installed us and de only), it's probably to attempts to unlock
(one for each layout) ;-)

I gave up after trying to install a KDE desktop as I didn’t know how to make it work. Which was before I received suggestions on this.

Instead I chose to reinstall Qubes and use a password that only consist of ASCII signs (as the xscreensaver doesn’t seem to be able to handle other signs in the installed version that Qubes OS 4.0.3 comes with) and use an easy way to shift the keyboard layout to the language I used to enter the password with.

That works fine.

But I would prefer a screensaver that also could handle other signs than just ASCII. As it would make it possible to construct a password that consist of letters from a non latin alphabet. Which would mean that a sentence in one language, would end up being rather random letters in another language. And thereby make it more difficult to use online wordbooks to break the code in case someone would try to do so.

And it would also make it possible to construct a password that consist of letters from more than one type of alphabet to make it even more difficult to break the code.

But of cause, with a key locker that can be overcome.

How well does Qubes OS actually protect against key lockers ?

I’ll make a new thread with that question...

Yes, it's an issue. Better to open it at there issue tracer or contact xcreensaver creator and request to add language indicator. I'm  agree on this: Qubes is used worldwide and need to this also about users from other countries.
