Hi.

I have Qubes 2.0 on my laptop. 8 GB ram and about 100 GB ssd with plenty of room.

I want to install a .deb file. I clicked the "Open With" icon then clicked the "Software Installer" icon.

I received the message: Failed to install file. Failed with unknown error code.

I want this file installed only on this one specific VM I made. How may accomplish this task?

If it matters, the file is a crypto currency wallet that I want only on that one specific VM.

Thank you.

Here are instructions to install and use the Electrum wallet: https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/split-bitcoin/
As you will see, it is based on a couple of VMs, to keep the keys separate form the hot wallet. But your .deb file is not installed in any of the two VMs, rather in a third called template.

I would suggest you have a look at the basic explanation of template working: https://www.qubes-os.org/getting-started/#appvms-qubes-and-templatevms

Thank you.,

Francesco, it is actually not ethereum or bitcoin. it is another crypto coin. Would the information you linked still be valid?

The information linked by Francesco is general and not related to a specific software.

I am sorry for the offtopic, but why are you using unsupported Qubes 2.0? See https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/supported-versions/ for supported versions.

The normal route would be to clone an existing Debina template, and
install the necessary tools ion that tem[plate.
Then switch the VM to use the new template.

It IS possible to install a deb file to somewhere of your own choosing,
using 'dpkg -i --root=<dir>'. Since /usr/local is distinct to each VM,
(it's a link to /rw/usrlocal), you may be able to install the package
to /usr/local, and this would make the application specific to one VM.
There are problems with this approach - the application may expect to
find files/libraries in specific places, or may require multiple
dependent packages which would also need to be installed in the VM.

Alternatively you could download all the required packages to
/rw/config, and install the application when the qube starts, either by
an entry in /rw/config/rc.local or with a script referenced in
.config/autostart.

I would strongly recommend using a dedicated template. But if you are sure
you only want the application in one qube, then perhaps a standalone
qube might be the best solution?

The link that explains how template VM work yes is valid. But the link to split the ethereum installation into two different VMs should be heavily adapted to your specific case that you did not mention. But studying it will help you to understand the philosophy behind Qubes.

Frans, Unman -

I appreciate the reply but what is the advantage of "splitting" my virtual wallet between 2 VMs?

Sorry if that is a simple question but I have difficulty understanding these technical things.

As Vit pointed earlier, I am using Qubes 2.0.  Would it be helpful if I got the most recent Qubes?  I noticed the most recent Qubes (3.2) uses "beta" Grub 2.0.2 so I am afraid to use anything labeled "beta".

Thank you all.

You're right, I've missed this link and focused on the latter one.

The private keys are stored in a VM that is (or at least should be) disconnected from Internet and other potential sources of complex untrusted input that could compromise it. So, it should be more resistant so some exploits if some parts of code are vulnerable.

I guess we aren't discussing anything that has been substantially modified since the first release of Qubes. (But I've started using Qubes at R3-RC1, so I am not sure.) The main reason for update is security. Version older than R3.2 do not receive any security updates from the Qubes team.

I haven't noticed that, but it has worked for me well. And I neither remember nor can find massive Grub-related issues in this mailing list, So, I guess it will work well for you.

Exactly, but Electrum (in the linked example) has a facility that allows to export a file to be signed and to import a signed filed.  This is important to be able to split  the signing process. If your .deb program does NOT have something similar I do not know if it is possible to make the same split.
