3.2r2 tray icons disappaer in i3

Hi,

I just tried out qubes for the first time, after you guys finally moved away from KDE :)

I'm very happy with it, but have an annoying bug.
All my tray icons disappear after a while (nm-applet, pidgin)
The only tray icon that is always there is the qubes manager.
the processes are still there and i still get notifications from the applets, just the icons are not visible.
if i start another instance of for example nm-applet, it will show just that one icon but will show all notifications twice.

Does anybody have an idea from what angle to debug this issue?

Is there any particular event that causes them to disappear, or does it just
happen over time?

Does it seem like the icons that have disappeared are still "taking up space"
in the system tray (as in the screenshot in that issue)?

It seems that both reloading i3 config and putting the system to sleep and resuming will make the icons disappear.
They are not taking space in the tray, they are just not visible, but the processes are running in the vms.
