Hello everyone,

I think that the idea of running Qubes OS as a live system is great and would really like to try this out, but unfortunately it doesn't start on my computer.

This is the according rsdosreport:
Qubes OS (Live) - rdsosreport

And this is the dmesg output:
Qubes OS (Live) - dmesg

I guess that the lines #927 to #932 give some information why it was not able to boot (from a USB flash drive), but does anyone have an explanation for this?

Any kind of advice how I could get this working would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and best wishes

David

I also encountered a problem like this when trying to install, I think R3.1-rc1, to an external hard drive.  In my case, the installer booted and installed Qubes onto the external hard drive.  However, when it was time to boot from the external drive, although grub came up, as soon as the kernel booted, the USB port actually seemed to turn off (my external drive adapter has a separate LED to indicate the USB port is active.  I saw similar symptoms as shown in your logs - the USB host controllers are detected, but the storage unit attached to the USB port is not.  I believe some users have seen similar issues with USB-attached keyboards.  This definitely was not a problem with Qubes R2 - I'm not sure I ever tried running from an external drive with R3.0.

My guess was that it was either related to USB 3.0, or the initramfs/initrd image is missing a kernel module needed to get USB storage to work.  I took the cheap way out, and moved to internal storage.  However, that's not much help for trying to run a Live USB.

Well, it won't boot on a VM (Virtual Box running on Windows - Other distros run this way without any problem) as well, it also crashes at some point of the booting process.

I originally did not see this question (and maybe it should have been posted to qubes-devel, as it is not related to stable version), but I think that I have seen the exactly same issue. Marek suggests that the next release should work OK: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-devel/PySF4zOLLSo

Try running the USB card in a 2.0 port. On my laptop the left side is USB3 and the right 2.0. It would only operate on 2.0 side.
