During Stage 3, on the midst of upgrading xfce4 packages (specifically genmon-plugin), the process encountered Buffer I/O errors on the device of the root file system, along with a whole slew of writing warnings and errors on the same device.  When the dust is settled, dom0 remains (somewhat) functioning, but the root filesystem was thrown into ‘emergency_ro’ mode, at about 87% full. Right before the Buffer I/O errors started, dmesg reported switching root-pool to out-of-data-space mode (for both queue IO and error IO), which unfortunately meant little to me.  ‘mount -o remount,we’ did not report anything but the fs remained read-only.  ‘lvconvert —merge’ of the R42Backup snapshot that was created by the update script returns a message to the effect that merging into the old snapshot origin qubes_dom0/root is not supported.  While dom0 is partially working, the system is essentially stuck.  Any help to get me out of the jam will be most appreciated.  TIA.

The problem was the insufficient size of root-pool.  The system is now close to being ready for another go at upgrade-in-place.
