When I press hibernate, nothing happens. Was it supposed to work? If so, how can I debug what's happening?

Hibernation is not supported by Xen, so it's probably not supposed to
work. However, suspend (S3 sleep) is supported.

No. Xen doesn't support hibernate (suspend-to-disk). And XFCE doesn't
check if it's running under Xen, so it still shows a button for
hibernate anyway.
