I updated qubes a few days ago, and had a number of updates. Since then
the boot process hangs. It has stopped at 2 different messages:

"Starting Hold until boot process finishes up..."

I eventually ended up trying to reinstall i3wm:
sudo qubes-dom0-update i3*

Since then the boot process hangs with:

"Starting Light Display Manager...finishes up..."

so I tried:
sudo qubes-dom0-update --action=reinstall lightdm
rebooted and got same message

then did:
sudo yum remove lightdm
sudo qubes-dom0-update lightdm lightdm-gtk

the latter reinstalled everything removed in the former, except for
"libconfig"
I rebooted, and still getting the same message.

If i do #systemctl status lightdm.service
It says it is loaded, but reports:
"Active: failed (Result: start-limit-hit) since Tue 2018-5-29..."
and
"Process: 4558 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/lightdm (code=exited,
status=1/FAILURE)"

This has left me unable to use my system, so any advice is much
appreciated.

After recent updates and a reboot I seem to have contracted the problems
I was having with the release candidate here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Qubes/comments/7ygt7d/apps_still_not_launching_from_qubes_menu_in_new/

However, the solution I found last time is not working.

qvm-run -u root -a <TemplateVM> xterm

does nothing. I've tried various TemplateVMs and AppVMs. Dom0 works
fine, but nothing else will open.

I also tried Qubes Settings - refreshing the app list and removing and
adding apps to the menu.

Any other ideas?
