Hello,

I recently used dd (as suggested in the qubes documentation) to burn the latest qubes os r2 to a blank dvd. I then placed that dvd inside a Dell OptiPlex 960, and in the BIOS I enabled VT-x, VT-d, and TPM. I then booted to the DVD and reached the Qubes install screen. I selected verify and install Qubes OS. The install starts but eventually it gets stuck on:

[OK] Reached Target Basic System

I tried every kernel in the troubleshooting options, and they all get stuck in that same place. Any idea why this is not working? This Dell OptiPlex 960 is the same default hardware that came with the machine.

Thanks!
Chris

Hello Chris,

I'm not finding the statement in the documentation, that you should
use dd to burn to an DVD. Here is why not.

Use your burner of choice to burn the iso to an optical medium.

If you prefer to use USB as a source for installation, then you just need to copy the ISO onto the USB device, e.g. using dd:
dd if=Qubes-R2-rc2-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdX

Could be added some advice in the wiki to check the md5 sum to avoid writting errors in the CD/DVD/USB?

The dd is very easy if you want to use a USB pendrive as install media, if done properly.

I am using Windows, so what would be the device name for a usb key?

You would first download a 'dd' utility for Windows (or use another program that can transfer an ISO image to USB). However... It sounds like your DVD is burned correctly because when you booted it with the 'test and install' option it eventually began installing Qubes (I believe this means the disc passed its self-check).

I used dd on Windows to copy the Qubes ISO to a USB key. When I boot to the USB key it says "Missing operating system"..  When booting to the DVD it gets stuck on:

[OK] Reached Target Basic System

and nothing else happens. Anyone know why I am failing to install Qubes?

I don't know why. You have at least a couple options, though...
Download Fedora 20 (what Qubes is based on) and see if you can get any farther with it on that machine.
Or find a computer that is on the Qubes hardware compatibility list:
https://qubes-os.org/wiki/HCL

Qubes is rather finnicky about hardware, and many (probably most) of us on this list have purchased computers specifically to run Qubes based on the info in the HCL.
