user defined internal ip-addresses

i noticed, when changing an appvm's netvm and restoring a backup that the appvm's ip-address changes.
i was wondering, how you determine the internal ips (+ gateway ip).
furthermore would it be possible to make the ip a vm setting (similar to the mac)?

i noticed it because i have networking between some vms and the iptables rules broke.
(and i could organize the ip-addresses for my vms in a way i can remember them. this is useful if looking logged traffic)

would there be any downside to ip's set by the user? (i don't think so)

Each VM's internal IP address is generated from that VM's QID (a unique
identifying number assigned to each VM upon creation). To see this, run
(in dom0):

$ qvm-ls --network --ids

Then compare the "qid" and "ip" columns. Notice that the last octet of
each IP is equal to (qid + 2).

I'm not sure about the gateway IP.
