i3wm tiling window manager - is qubes-manager supposed to work?

Hello everybody,
I tried to follow the (easy) guide in https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/i3/
and tried to login with i3. It kind of works, namely I can start
programs inside appVMs from dmenu and the windows are tiled ok.

The problem is that I can't seem to be able to start Qubes-Manager:
running it from a shell terminates after several seconds with a stack
trace mentioning that it was unable to show its window using dbus.

I tried the manual way (git clone/build rpm/install), and still
everything works, but no Qubes Manager.

Should I expect it to work?

I had the same problem but after killing the qube-manager that was in the background and restarting it it worked. Also after reboot it works.
