Hi All,

Can you please advise as to the correct/best standard spring and
damper setup for the H4.

I have the Zetec Rs1800 engine up front with Avon ZV3 155/55 R14.

I'm afraid I can't afford an adustable set up at the mo so it will
have to be standard fiesta springs and shocks.

I think I saw somewhere that it should be XR2i at the front and 1.1 at
the rear if so has anyone fitted shorter springs at the front.

My car seems to be a bit high at the sharp end and is bouncing about
too much at speed.

many thanks in advance

Trevor

I fitted monroe gas dampers for a 1.1 fiesta and leigsfords (speller??)
springs again 1.1. This was in an attempt to stop the rear tyres rubbing
the arches when the boot had a load in. The handling was not improved or
changed from the factory built set up. even tho one of the original
dampers was leaking the rear tyres still rubbed. So no change to mine.
The consensus from people in the know was Xr2i set up at the front and
1.1 at the rear. Q Stourbridge tried sensatracs and other 'cheap'
alternatives but could not improve on standard ford for a budget set up.
To add ours was built fron a 1.6 Zetec Si and the front corners are
completely different to an Xr2 due to sizes of dampers, wishbone pins
etc. So be careful if sourcing second hand.

Thanks for the reply Gary thats what I thought the set up was.

I will check the size of the bottom of the strut on the front dampers
as I believe thats where the difference lies i.e. larger for the Si ?

I need to get it up on stands and give the suspension agood check over
just a bit cold on the drive at the moment.

Thanks

The size difference is between the Mk3 Fiesta and the Mk3.5 Fiesta
They changed quite a few things on the cars then, somewhere in 1994.
The bottom balljoint taper, the number of rivets holding the bottom
balljoint to the wishbone (from 2 to 3), the size of the bottom of the shock
absorber.
And thats just on the front suspension.

Thanks Jim,

Once the temperature rises above freezing I can get out there and
double check.

I think its the Mk3 version at the front but I will need to look to be
sure.

At the moment when turning at highish speeds its like swing boat and
the front nearside damper wheezes when you bump test it, and bounces
slighty more than the offside.

Never had any problems with the dampers grounding out so I think the
springs are probably ok.

I also believe I will have to change out a front wheel bearing it
rumbles when I accelerate and turn right (roundabouts) at the same
time, are there any differences known about the bearing sizes for Mk3
and 3.5?

Thanks

Trevor
