I need to change the timing belt and water pump - 1.6 CVH. A quick question; is there enough space to the side to get the covers off and do this or do I need a double jointed chimpanzee, lift the engine a bit etc. I seem to remember reading that a Zetec is real tight but CVH is Ok.
Any tips for anything out of the norm is appreciated.
Thanks.

It may be quite easy to remove the wheel arch liner to gain more
access.  It is tight, but should be possible.

Assuming you have the later 2 part belt cover (most will be) then it can be
done but it's tight.
You will probably need to lever the engine across slightly on it's mountings
towards the gearbox side, no need to undo the mountings, just use the flex
in them.
I have a specially shaped bit of wood that i put in the mounting to push it
across and hold it there.

I've never removed the liner as it's normally sikaflexed to the frame, also,
i think you would have to remove the brake pipe to the front wheel, more
hassle.

Good info Jim. I've only worked on Carole and Geoff's 2+2 which has the
liner riveted and cut outs around the brake pipe.  Quick and easy to remove.

Steve

Yes as Jim said.
I've seen it done that way on my 2+2.

Hi Nigel.  You have probably done the job now, I was doing something similar at about the same time.  My 2+2 has the 1.6 CVH engine on which the camshaft oil seal popped out, that was a load of oil dumped on the roads between Uxbridge and Langley - one hell of a mess in the car park.  While I was at it, I decided to change the cam belt and that is where the real challenge started - very limited clearance.  Top cam belt cover came off no problem but the lower one needed the crankshaft pulley removed - not enough room to get it out.  After lots of foul language and thumping around, the solution was to remove the front engine mount only and lower the engine enough to clear the subframe - at its lowest point, there was just enough room to remove the pulley - less than 1mm.  I found that I was raising and lowering the engine many times to get "comfortable access" to the areas needed.  Picture below shows the challenge.

Yes as Martin said. Not that I've done this on mine. I think Jim Herne did it for me.

Hi Martin,
If you loosen the nut A and the matching one on the other side of the mounting.
And then push a wedge shaped bit of wood in the gap B between the mounting and it’s bracket.
You should find you can push the engine across in the engine bay just enough to get the pulley off without lowering the engine.

It’s always worked for me on the 2+2.

Jim

No not done it yet. Started the job, but first checked alternator with fan belt off. Lo and behold noise was alternator bearings, had a spare from the Xtreme so fitted that. So can belt and water pump waiting to be done.
Thanks for all the inputs.
Nigel

I see it now, effectively pushing the engine from left to right across the bay giving a tad more space to get the pulley off.  I remember taking those nuts off but nothing appeared to happen, perhaps because there was no wedge available!  Having access to the workshop did make life very easy.  The car was on a lift and I made use of a tall hydraulic prop (best description I can think of) to raise and lower the engine.  I was confident it wouldn't fall out because there is so little space elsewhere and the angle of dangle meant it fouled on other parts of the engine bay.

Thanks for that information.

Martin
