Hello everyone
I have a H4 with an electrical fault. It is fitted with a Zetec 1.8i petrol injection engine. There is a three way fuse box that is mounted ( in my case ) above the battery casing which has overheated and melted. I have had problems before with it blowing a 30amp fuse which kills the engine and makes it impossible to start. This usually occurs when a lot of electrical things are running. I always carry a box of 30amp fuses to overcome this. However after being stuck in traffic for a long time it went into meltdown and needs replacement. Can anyone tell me where I can get one and what is causing the problem. The engine is otherwise reliable and a good runner.
ALL THE BEST

Do you have any pictures ?
I can't recall the Mk3 Fiesta having a fusebox on the battery terminal, i
think that came in later.
So, it could be something the kit builder fitted.
If the 30 amp fuse is running most of the car then i'm not surprised if it
blows and melts, that's not enough.
Even just the engine would be close to 30 amps, the injectors, ignition
system and fuel pump are normally fused separately at 20 amps each, plus the
lambda (10amps) and ecu (5 amps).

Some pictures may help work out whats what, follow the wires from the fuses
and see if you can see where they go.
Also check how the thick wire on the alternator output is connected to the
battery, does it go via the fuse ?

Jim

During my 9 year ownership of an H4, I acquired various bits and pieces that are still around: I have a complete OE fuse / relay moulding (fits to the right of the steering wheel in the lower half of the dash panel and hinges downwards)...it still has various relays and fuses fitted and came direct from a Mk3 Fiesta. If you're interested, delivery could be arranged via Quantum post (QOC Chairman lives not far away) and for £15 it's yours.
My H4 had the 1.6 silvertop Zetec, so I can't advise on what might be wrong with yours.

I didn't remember one either so I've just been to check and I don't have a fusebox by the battery, just the one in the dash.

My H4 was built from a Mk3.5 donor, originally 1.6 but changed to a 2.0 about 10 years ago.  Glyn - do you know if yours has had an engine swap or if it was always a Zetec?  Like Jim I'm wondering if it's an addition so pictures might help.

Dear all
Thank you everyone for your speedy replies. I am always impressed by the depth of knowledge and willingness to share it with a fellow Quantum owner in trouble.
I have looked into the paperwork that came with the H4. I also have been racking my memory.
It was based on a MK3.5 donor vehicle that was begun by the man I bought it from and due to ill health was completed by the factory who put in the 1.8i engine.
I am disappointed that the factory has made such a bad job with the wiring. I have been having to put up with the problem for ages. It is otherwise a brilliant car to drive and I really enjoy it.
I have found a very good mobile auto electrician who is coming to me on Monday to sort out the problem by fitting a new fuse box that will spread some of the load that went through old one.
May I wish everyone a merry Christmas and happy New Year.
