Hi folks,

My 2+2's dashboard is starting to look a little tired and rather than just take it out and clean it up I wondered about replacement. A quick search of the forum here reveals that a Mark3 Fiesta, a Vauxhall Corsa, a Ford Orion and, of course, A Fiat Coupé have all provided a 2+2 with a new dash at some point but those threads are all pretty old. I do also recall seeing one Q which had acquired a Jag XJS' interior, up at Stourbridge. I'd like something that is a little more modern and I kind of like keeping a Fiesta connection if I can.

I've been looking at the dash fitted to the Mark 5 Fiesta (and Puma) as a likely candidate. A very cursory glance suggests that a lot of the major controls are in roughly similar positions and I think it's more attractive than the flatter dash used on the more recent Fiestas. But I've not done any measuring or thinking much beyond that point, so far.

The alternative I'm thinking of is to track down another Mark 2 Fiesta dash and play around with it outside the car to see what I can do with it myself. This way I can explore several options without having to take my Q off the road while I investigate. Sadly those are getting pretty rare, coming up as more expensive than some modern ones.

Have any of you considered the Mark5 Fiesta dash (or got further with this idea than I have)?

Thanks in advance

Matthew

I think the major issue with the Mk5 Dash is that it is a fair bit wider, as are most modern car dashes.
So you end up trying to cut the end’s off neatly.

Don’t forget that you either need to make the new dash fit the existing heater system or swap that out as well and make that fit the 2+2
Then there’s the steering column, column switches etc
And making the new instrument cluster work with the old wiring.

It’s a lot of work which is why i never did it in my 2+2.
The H4 i plan to upgrade from a Mk3 Fiesta to a late Mk4 Fiesta dash but at least the basic bodyshell is the same size, but even so it will need extensive bulkhead mods as the heating system is totally different.

A peugoet 205 GTI instrument cluster is almost a direct fit in a Mk2 Fiesta dash and does give you a nice set of extra gauges with oil pressure and oi temp.
But you still need to fit all the senders from the 205 to make them work, and, i seem to remember i had to mod the circuit in the rev counter.

I have several spare Mk2 Fiesta dash carcases if you want to hack one up.

As Jim says, it's potentially an awful lot of work.

On mine, the entire Ford wiring loom forward of the driver's backside was removed and replaced with the Coupe wiring (with a few kilos of unnecessary wires removed). The steering wheel controls, the instrument loom, and the wiring to the radio, doors, electric windows, and suchlike dropped straight onto the right positions and with the right connections... I used the Fiat instrument pack but kept the rest of the Fiesta dash intact (and I still haven't quite got round to sorting out the fascia).

If you're planning on changing steering wheel, switches, and instruments irrespective of the rest of the dash you're likely to have electrical issues somewhere along the line managing all the necessary circuits. The more modern, the more difficult - for example, the Mk2 Fiesta has a mechanical speedo connection but most modern systems have electrical pulse counters; you'll need an adaptor of some sort. You may have issues with warning and indicator lights too - things that go to ground on one system might go to the positive rail on another - and you'll need to make sure the alternator charging light is present and working. Switches are unlikely to have matching connectors...

Buy the blue one in London on ebay as it has the specific quantum dash fitted.

I should have mentioned earlier but if you customise the original dashboard then the friend I sold my flocking company to could then flock the dash to your requirements in a range of colours or two tone etc, the finish is like alcantara and stops any glare on the windscreen in bright sunlight. If you are on Facebook if you search for Face Lift Autos you will find him.

Probably worth serious consideration - when I first drove a mk5 fiesta I thought there was a very bad crack in the screen, until realising it was the reflection of the airbag join moulding in the dash!

Someone recommended buying the blue 2+2 that was for sale in London, because it had a custom dash. Does anyone know the source of these? Was it a one-off ? Sounds like a moulding for Eddy ? I'd buy one....

I had some emails from the person that had the mould for these, he was going to sell it to me but he just stopped replying to emails.
It must have been 4 or 5 years ago but i should still have details at home.
I don’t think it was a Quantum part, i think he sold them some of the dashes, I’ve seen them in 3 or 4 Quantums.

Thanks Jim, and all, for some extremely useful feedback. It does sound like I'll be best off thinking about remodelling the right-shaped dash to start with rather than trying to be too clever. I am tempted by the extra Peugeot dials though...

I'm in the south Oxfordshire area but have family in East Sussex and regularly travel between the two. If any of you do have a spare Fiesta Mk2 dash lying around (Ghia/XR2 shape)  I would be most grateful to take it off your hands.  It can be pretty tatty as I'd intend to use it more for its qualities as a template than for anything else. Anything that would end up visible I can pinch off the current dashboard.
I will happily make a trip to pick one up, wife and family permitting.

I certainly have some spare Mk2 Dashes, they are in Felbridge, near East Grinstead, West Sussex at the moment but one could be moved to Horsham, West Sussex or Headley, Hants for you to collect.

I can turn my steering wheel about 1.5cm before the wheels move
and when I turn the steering wheel I can hear a thwack in the steering rack pigion - just before the wheels move.

can it be adjusted by tightening the slipper nut or do I need to rebuild/a replacement unit?

Hans.

Is it normal on the coupe that the half of the steering gear pinion and yoke are in the bulkhead and sealed with a lot of sealer inside a large hole in the bulkhead.
On the 2+2 it is on the outside of the bulkhead.

Forgot to ask

Can I use a standard MK2 (non XR2) steering rack on the coupe Q113 - 185x14 without rubbing the wheels
gives a smaller turning circle . . .
Or  do i need a XR2 steering rack.

I think so, it is the same on mine.

Mine used to do that. I fixed it by fitting a new steering rack.
If your fuel lines go round the front of the steering rack (as per build manual) then you will have to ‘persuade’ the fuel lines to move out of the way to give clearance to get the rack out.

Indeed, I do have such a dash and my car is a sort of blue, however, the one in London had a creme interior.
Mine actually comes from Stourbridge, just a mile down the road from old Q and has a black interior.
On madaboutkitcars, there's one exactly like the London one, so I presumed the dash was a Quantum product on the option list.

Hans, did your car passed the tests, c/w towbar?
