As title, anyone got a complete spare one lying about a garage ?

My 2+2 doesn't have one fitted and I wonder if I am missing out on a bit of suspension stability. Strange that in build manual it states 'If fitting an anti-roll bar', how many are without , surely they do a job on the car.

Comments please.

Calum.

These things can be very complex - I don't hope to understand them fully, and suspect the best way of 'testing' them is to do just that! Of course what may be better for track, may not be for road and vice-versa. Some people 'improving' their cars fit fatter and fatter anti-roll bars, and it could be argued almost end up with a solid axle vehicle :-)

I aint no expert , however , an anti-roll bar should make the rear work together from what I have researched , so I would have thought having one is better than not , particularly with front wheel drive cars (like the XR2 + Quantum) they are supposed to reduce understeer , allegedly.
Do you have one fitted ?

It depended on the donor car spec, the lower spec cars didn’t have one.
If yours is XR2 based then it should have one really.

I tried to get past a MOT on a XR2 that had failed on the anti roll drops links by taking the roll bar off but was told that as the car originally had one it had to be fitted.

Hi Jim, found this comment of yours while researching on the subject (see I do search before asking) , I suppose it's down to builder of car , and as I said in build manual it does state 'If Fitting' , suppose that could be down to donor car right enough.

Would be interesting to know who does and doesn't have one , Do you have one on the 2+2 ?

Thanks

Calum.

I think the general agreement is as you've stated. Mine has anti-roll bar  (XR2 donor), but I've never tried it without. Anti-roll bar on rear should decrease understeer, anti roll bar on front increases oversteer - again of course that's simplified. I know when I changed the front MGB GT springs on my Calvy Mitchel to softer, (also longer free length) springs it increased roll, this made it much more driveable and decreased understeer as well - it was a huge improvement. It has no anti - roll bars, but that simple spring change is an example of what changes can emerge. One Calvy Mitchel owner put a huge diameter (about 25mm IIRC) on the front of his (and none on the rear) - I suspect it went straight on at corners!

Yes, i’ve one on all my cars.
There are 2 different sizes, the XR2 has the larger diameter.

Yeah been doing my homework, 14mm I believe is the XR2 one, and I got your link for the mk3 front arb mounts too. Need to look under car & see if there's any marks to fit mounts 🤔

There should be a couple of raised crosses in the gel coat for the mounting holes, though i seem to remember that on mine i put the brackets in a different place.
I just bolted the drop links to the rear suspension, fitted the ARB, ARB bushes and brackets and lifted it up until it it touched the floor.

Hi Calum

I had the anti-roll bar on my XR2 based 2+2 for 20+ years but took it off when I did a refurb a couple of years ago because the Quantum mounting brackets had corroded through.
I haven't noticed any difference in the handling. Although my sprint championship got cancelled a year before the refurb, I still do Curborough and enjoy some 'spirited' commutes down the back roads, so I don't think you're missing out on anything.
Remember, the 2+2 is a lot lighter than the XR2 at the back so you don't get the body roll that the anti-roll bar is there to resist.

Interesting reading Dave , thank-you.
I am in process of refurbing rear suspension so difficult to tell as rear is as soft as putty just now. I do have a Safety Devices cabin roll bar fitted which has certainly made things feel more solid.
Think I will get rear shocks & springs on , check all rear bushes and take it from there.
