How to Install and Use ElmScan 5 Compact on Windows 10

ElmScan 5 Compact is a popular scan tool that allows you to diagnose your vehicle's problems using your Windows PC. Step 1: Install OBDwiz software

OBDwiz is the diagnostic software that comes with ElmScan 5 Compact. It lets you read and clear trouble codes, check emissions readiness, display real-time parameters, and more. To install OBDwiz, follow these steps:

    • Click on OBDwiz and follow the prompts to download the software.
    • Run the downloaded file and follow the instructions to install OBDwiz on your PC.
    • When prompted, enter the license key that is located on the Quick Start Guide included with ElmScan 5 Compact.

    Step 2: Connect ElmScan 5 Compact to the PC

    To connect ElmScan 5 Compact to your PC, you need a USB cable. Follow these steps:

      • Plug one end of the USB cable into the ElmScan 5 Compact scan tool interface.
      • Plug the other end of the USB cable into a free USB port on your PC.
      • If the driver for ElmScan 5 Compact does not install automatically, click on Windows Driver and follow the instructions to install the driver manually.
      • The 'Power' LED on ElmScan 5 Compact will turn a dim red when you connect it to the PC's USB port.

      Step 3: Plug ElmScan 5 Compact into your OBD port

      The OBD port is usually found on the driver's side, under the dash. It is a 16-pin connector that looks like this:

        • Locate the OBD port on your vehicle. If you can't find it, visit obdport.info for help.

        • The red 'Power' LED on ElmScan 5 Compact will increase in brightness and the Tx/Rx LEDs will cycle on and off from left to right.

        Step 4: Turn ignition to "Key On, Engine Off" position

        To communicate with your vehicle's computer, you need to turn the ignition to the "Key On, Engine Off" position. This means that the key is in the ignition and turned to the second position, but the engine is not running. Follow these steps:

          • If your vehicle has a conventional key ignition, insert the key and turn it to the second position.
          • If your vehicle has a push button start, press the button without stepping on the brake pedal.
          • If you have done this correctly, you should see some lights on your dashboard, but no sound from the engine.

          Step 5: Launch OBDwiz software

          To launch OBDwiz software, follow these steps:
