Was it just a test, no further developement?

Right now, we are trying to port the code to PlayN and generate a pure client version that would not need a local server.

We have branched the code to http://code.google.com/p/quake2-playn-port/ to avoid breaking the existing version in the transition. The port is a bit stuck with some GWT issues right now, hope we will have some more progress soon.
