The Telugu version of Mayabazar was released on 27 March 1957,[11] and the Tamil version two weeks later on 12 April.[35][36] Both versions have a film-reel length of 5,888 metres (19,318 ft).[1] A commercial success, Mayabazar had a theatrical run of 100 days in 24 theatres and went on to become a silver jubilee film.[11][h] After the film's release, 40,000 colour calendars of Rama Rao as Krishna were distributed to the public.[11] The Telugu version of Mayabazar was dubbed into Kannada with the same name in 1965; it remained the last Indian film to be dubbed into Kannada until the announcement of a dubbed version of Kochadaiiyaan (2014) after 50 years.[38]
Mayabazar was the first colourised Telugu film,[48] with its audio remastered from monaural to a DTS 5.1-channel system.[49] In late November 2007 a Hyderabad company, Goldstone Technologies, acquired world negative rights to 14 Telugu films produced by Vijaya Vauhini Studios, including that of Mayabazar, to digitally remaster them in colour.[11][50] C. Jagan Mohan of Goldstone Technologies' experience at All India Radio gave him the idea of converting the film's audio to DTS.[47] The audio was restored, sound effects remastered, distortion eliminated, and the volume of the vocals increased, and musicians re-recorded the film's background music on seven tracks instead of one.[47]
A team of 165 people worked for eight months; Mohan used 180,000 shades of colour to create a tone similar to human skin, and employed 16.7-million-shade colour technology.[47] Apart from colouring clothing and jewellery, Mohan said that the song "Vivaha Bhojanambu" and the wedding scene in the climax were the most challenging sequences, and that the food should look more realistic after colourisation. In the wedding scene, Mohan explained: "Each and every rose petal strewn on the pathway had to be coloured. Further, each frame in the climax has many actors. In technical parlance, we refer to a set of colours used for skin tone, clothes, jewelry and so on as different masks. If five or six masks were used on one character, the presence of many actors in a frame called for that much more work."[47] Three songs ("Bhali Bhali Deva", "Vinnavamma Yashodha" and "Choopulu Kalisina Subha Vela") and many poems were cut from the remastered colour version to maintain print quality.[49]
The Film Heritage Foundation announced in March 2015 that they would be restoring Mayabazar, along with a few other Indian films from 1931 to 1965, as a part of their restoration projects carried out in India and abroad in accordance with international parameters. The foundation opposed digital colourisation, stating that they "believe in the original repair as the way the master or the creator had seen it".[56]
Yesteryears super hit film 'Mayabazar', considered as a classic, is all set for release in colour. Directed by K V Reddy, it stars Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, Savithri and SV Ranga Rao in the lead roles.
The colored version of the film will be released shortly in theaters followed by its DVD. This is set to enhance the magic of the film even further. Timeless Bollywood classics like Mughal-e-Azam and Naya Daur have been released in colour.
The movie was made to be viewed in B&W. The depth is lost in the colourized version. Look at the temple in the background of example 6. The original has so much depth and the 2010 version lacks that depth i.e., it looks like a flat wallpaper.
The issue with the colorised digital version of Maya Bazaar isn't much about the content. The problem is with the poor post-production. The reworked background score is akin to any South-Indian television soap and the less you talk about the interludes, the better it is. The colours don't quite add up well. The edits leading to each sequence are funny, with the tiny circles, rectangular boxes opening up the frames feel like terrible digital gimmicks that undo the simplistic charm of the movie. But there's only so much that one can complain about the opportunity of watching Maya Bazaar at the theatres. The end credits only left me distraught about the world I had to get back to, the mundaneness, a life sans the magic and wizardry of Maya Bazaar. However, this would work for a perfect bedtime story I could tell my grandchildren about a movie that wouldn't lose its charm even six decades from now.
Temple says: I can see why this film is so well loved by generations of movie audiences. The production values and the performances are just amazing, and the songs are beautiful and melodic. Its quite a privilege to be able to watch so many of the greats of an era appear in a work of this calibre. I had a preconception that the mythological genre might be a bit heavy going or ponderous, but this film just sparkles in so many ways. The colourisation is quite deft in my opinion, and highlights the richness of the costumes and sets, creating a truly opulent and fantastical look to the film. NTR was a revelation as Krishna, Savitri steals every scene she is in, and S.V. Ranga Rao is hilarious. The DVD re-release comes in a 2 DVD pack, and includes both the colourised version and the original B&W. I highly recommend it! This gets 5 stars!
