AC_LANG for header detection?

I just filed http://code.google.com/p/quagmire/issues/detail?id=6, and
I was wondering how to approach this? In the meantime, I'll use
autoconf's header detection...

I think the thing to do would be first pick a syntax for the user to
use to differentiate the cases, then parameterize the code in
checkheader.mk according to the compiler to use. Ideally you could also
fix checkfunc.mk to the same thing at the same time...
