According to reports, the sixth and tenth class textbooks no longer include lessons on card games like rummy, following demands from academics, teachers, and political leaders in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The syllabus for class sixth, third semester Math Textbook gave examples using playing cards; the integers chapters taught students addition and subtraction through playing cards, while the class tenth students had lessons for statistics and facts with card decks.

Starting this academic year, the lessons containing examples through playing cards have been removed and replaced with new examples. According to reports, the examples were swapped with coloured flowers instead of playing cards.

In statistics, the examples of picking a random card were also removed, and only rolling a die and flipping a coin are left in the new textbooks. The changes were made due to recent suicides in the state due to online rummy. The people urged that these examples in textbooks encouraged these kinds of activities.

The Tamil Nadu government recently banned online games like rummy and poker in the state through a new bill called the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Online Gambling and Regulation of Online Games Bill.

The first time the bill was sent to Governor RN Ravi, he returned it without giving his assent, saying that the state does not have the authority to pass the bill and ban online games. Law Minister S Regupathy clarified that the state can pass the bill, and it will be passed again and sent back to the Governor.

Governor Ravi gave his assent after the bill was re-enacted and came into effect across the state, banning online games, including skill games like Rummy and Poker. Only the games that did not have a monetary aspect are allowed under the law.

CHENNAI: With Tamil Nadu schools set to reopen on June 6, the school education department is taking steps to provide uniforms, textbooks and notebooks to students on the same day and within a couple of days.

As per the circular from the department, the education department on Friday announced that the schools will reopen on June 6 from classes 1 to 12, which was in fact postponed due to general election results scheduled on June 4.

Subsequently, measures are already in place to provide 14 free items usually given to government school students. As per department officials, the textbooks and uniforms will be ensured that children get on the same day of school reopening.

"We will send the uniforms and textbooks before the school commences to respective educational blocks. So that teachers can collect it before the school reopens and distribute it on time, "said an official.

Also, to address concerns regarding uniforms of government school children, the respective school management committee (SMC) and former students have collaborated to provide better uniforms for the students.

"The SMC members and former students should be coordinated by the principals and the SMC meeting should be held in all the 50 selected schools given in different districts and after consultation, the decision should be taken to carry out uniform sewing for the students, "the notification from the department stated in April.

CHENNAI: In what could be termed the renaissance for Tamil Nadu Textbooks and Educational Services Corporation, the attempt to reprint its old books received thumbs up from book lovers as it has received more than 2,000 orders at the recently concluded Chennai Book Fair.

From its inception, the textbook corporation had published books on various topics including oceanography and adolescent psychology. But in the middle years, it restricted itself to publishing the textbooks alone.

New Delhi: Starting from the academic year 2024-25, school children will be studying from new, updated textbooks as the education ministry is all set to release the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for all levels in the coming months, ThePrint has learnt.

The NCF is a set of curricular guidelines, a key component of the new National Education Policy (NEP). So far, the ministry has released NCF for the foundational level, which is pre-school to Class 2. NCF for other levels will be released in the coming months, according to which the books will be updated, a senior education ministry official told ThePrint on condition of anonymity.

The process of developing the NCF is being led by an expert committee headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K. Kasturirangan, who also helmed the shaping of the NEP 2020. The exercise is being carried out under the supervision of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which works on the school-level curriculum.

On the basis of the NCF, textbooks for Classes 1 and 2 will be released by the end of the month, as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already adopted the guidelines in the foundational stage from the academic year 2023-24.

Another education ministry official told ThePrint that all states except Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have submitted their position papers on NCF, where they have informed the ministry of their best practices and what they expect from the syllabus.

The first education official quoted earlier also said that once the new books are released, the government will also align the new syllabus with PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), the new assessment platform that the government is in the process of launching.

These TN textbooks are available free of cost on the official site of Tamilnadu state edu board. But problem: too scattered Because maths-science-history-civics: all subjects are given in single PDF files term wise. and their very large in size.

New version starts from 2018

The present study examined the information seeking behaviour of male and female teachers working in the international schools located in Chennai City, Tamilnadu State, India. Descriptive research design was adopted. Well-structured, self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Out of 500 questionnaires randomly distributed, 300 duly-filled questionnaires were received and included for the analysis. The data was analyzed using SPSS package. The findings of the study reveal that : More male respondents seek general information often and more female respondents seek academic information often ; More female respondents seek information for preparing class notes and writing articles while more male respondents seek information for seminar presentation and general awareness; male respondents are frequent library visitors than the female respondents ; More male respondents spend 1-4 hours per week and more female respondents spend less than one hour per in the library; More male respondents than female respondents read only required things in the library, prefer to search with Google, visit the library for leisure reading and preparing for competitive exams, use the available print resources since few years and borrow the non-available items from wherever available. More female respondents than male respondents take print out / photocopies of required materials, borrow books from library for home, visit library for research work, use the available print resources since many years and purchase the books when they are not available in the school library. More male respondents than female respondents obtain the journals / magazines from library, use their own textbooks and reference books /workbooks /guides / specimen copies as their primary sources of information and use online resources as secondary source of information. More female respondents than male respondents obtained the journals / magazines through online sites, heavily used the textbooks borrowed from the library as the primary source of information and make use of notes and worked out papers as the secondary source of information. More male respondents than female respondents get guidance from senior teachers to learn to use e-resources, need help in the use of e-resources periodically / not at all, coin new words based on their earlier reading while searching, use simple words or phrases in searching, get relevant information from e-resources and search for full text and abstracts while looking for published information. More female respondents than mal respondents get guidance from library staff in the use of e-resources, need help often in the use of electronic resources, coin those keywords that they think at the time of searching, agree that the information obtained from e-resources cover a broad scope of their topics and search for index while looking for published information. More female respondents than male respondents faced technical problems and the problem of choosing appropriate databases in using the electronic resources. While more male respondents are bothered about lack of knowledge, non-availability of required books and e-resources and not proficient in search strategies, more female respondents are worried with lack of institutional support and lack of time. It is suggested to build an inclusive, modern, need based and congenial library to be ready to satisfy the information needs of male and female teachers of varied behaviour and pattern in their information seeking process.
